FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (July 6, 2012) – In addition to the 5 32 inch flat screen TVs, and the hundreds of dollars in cash prizes, and gas cards, and bicycles, and t-shirts, and water-balloon tosses . . . the 4th Annual Rivercity Rumble, presented by Rivercity Manufacturing & Machining and R & R Machining, provided race fans with some excellent on-track action as over 120 racers battled for their share of an almost $30,000 potential purse at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY!
Surprise winners, bumping and banging for the lead, and big-named visitors was the name of the game in all five divisions competing on the fast 1/3-mile MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY as well as both divisions of Mini-Mods racing on the smaller "Lightning Speedway" in the MTS infield!
GUSTIN GRABS GOLD
With a starting field of 28 Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modifieds, the $4000 to win Rivercity Rumble main event proved all the pre-race hype about the event was true. A great turnout of local and traveling racers hit the high-banks with the flying of the green flag; and much to the delight of local race fans, it was a local racer leading the opening salvo of laps.
Starting from the outside of the front row, weekly racer Hank Rollinger, Jr. led the field into the first turn and held that same position for the first seven laps. Rollinger's familiar red Fastenal #59 ran the high groove lap after lap, holding off several challenges from pole sitter Brad Waits who focused on the low groove until finally taking over the top spot on the eighth circuit of the 1/3-mile dirt track.
Waits remained out front just long enough to claim the $300 mid-race leader bonus on lap 15, before relinquishing the top spot to Marshalltown, IA's Ryan Gustin. Gustin, who'd started from the outside of the 3rd row, used the opening 15 laps to work his way through the front of the field before grabbing the lead on lap sixteen and holding on until the checkered flag.
But, it was no easy task for Gustin claiming the victory; as the leaders moved into the final laps of the feature, Happy, TX native Rodney Sanders, who'd been steadily working through the field from his inside sixth row starting spot was slowly but steadily gaining on the race leader. Still far enough behind Gustin to be an immediate threat for the lead, Sanders needed a little help . . . which arrived in the closing laps as Gusting caught the tail end cars on the lead lap and started tip-toeing through lapped traffic. This allowed Sanders to continue reeling in the #19 of Gustin . . . but it was too little too late, and Gustin held on for the win and the big payday, "I didn't know if the lapped cars were going to play into the finish or not," said Gustin after the win, "but this car was really running well I was able to get through there with no real problem at all for the win."
Despite having to settle for second, Sanders seemed pleased with the finish and the race, "It took me a little longer to work through the field, and I think I was catching Ryan, but he was strong and I just ran out of laps." Sanders went on to praise the event and the track specifically, "It was a lot of fun out there, this track was awesome tonight; I kept waiting for it to rubber up and it never did."
Gustin chimed in as well on his enjoyment of the event, "a big thank you to the fans and the businesses and supporters who made this event possible tonight. Mississippi Thunder is a fun track to race, and tonight the track crew really put together a great track - heck of a lot better than any track anyone else might have been racing on tonight!"
After slipping back as deep as forth in the running order, Rollinger, Jr. was able to re-pass Waits and hold on for a very strong third place finish, "What can I say, this was a great night. Running out front early and then staying up front shows that we may have some things figured out here."
Fourth heat race winner Zack Vanderbeek also got by Waits to finish fourth, with Waits holding on to complete the top 5. Winona Keith Foss proved that there was plenty of action throughout the entire field by picking up the $300 "Hard Charger" bonus, moving from a starting position of 22nd up to a 12th place finishing spot.
BLEESS BAGS A BIG-DOLLAR B-MOD FEATURE
Any way you look at it, it was a HUGE PAYDAY for 15 year old Jacob Bleess. Patiently waiting through several attempts at a start of the 25-lap TheEngineStore.com USRA B-Mod feature, Bleess never let the false starts rattle him; each time the green flag would waive, his EZ Fabricating #21 would jump from the pole position and quickly rocket away from the rest of the 26 car field.
Well, "patiently" being a relative term when talking with a teen-ager; "It was really tough. I kind of got frustrated after a while," Bleess said. "It got pretty warm in the car. I really wanted things to get going." And get going he did, as he help the lead flag-to-flag in convincing fashion to win the feature and collect the $1700 pay for the trip to Victory Lane.
In all sincerity though, Bleess is a great representative for the "Youth Brigade" that has made its presence known in the B-Mod Division at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. No fewer than 10 of the starters in the 26 car line-up are still in their teens . . . several of them, such as Bleess, in the lower range of the teenage years. But you'd never know it from watching him race or chatting with him after a win; on the track, he's smooth and patient . . . off the track, he's polite and actually almost quiet with a voice that sounds more like a 30-something veteran than a teenager.
Again, the maturity showed on the track Friday night. Bleess started from the pole with heat-race winners Jenae Gustin and Kylie Kath lining up second and third, respectively. Several abbreviated attempts at a start, and then some early race cautions slowed the early portion of the feature, but Bleess never wavered "You're always worried about who's behind you and what they're going to do," Bleess said. "On the restart, you always have to have a good start or you won't lead the lap."
Restart after restart Bleess refused to let the competition intimidate him and by the final lap, Bleess enjoying nearly an entire straightaway advantage over Kath. "The car worked really well on the bottom of the track," explained Bleess of his lane choice that helped him build the advantage. "Didn't have to put too much break in the car and it turned awesome."
Kath and Cory Crapser rounded out the top-3.
RICHARDS STEALS STREET STOCK FEATURE WIN
Throughout the 18-lap Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stock feature, many of the estimated 1,300 fans in attendance probably assumed that Shaun Mann was going to make this a "Snoozer" of a feature. Starting second, Mann took the lead with his black and orange #01 and appeared ready to win the feature walking away. The last two laps proved the old cliché that "it ain't over till it's over".
Early season point leader Cory Hanson spent the first half of the feature in a multi-car battle just outside the top two positions, after clearing pole sitter Ryan Henderson, Hanson set his sights on the leader . . . and appeared ready to set himself up as the "Spoiler" of Mann's feature winning plans. Lap after lap, Hanson closed in on Mann, until the two were nose to tail with the final two laps quickly approaching.
Coming out of turn two on the second to last lap, Hanson got a strong run and moved his black and red #79 to the inside of Mann to challenge for the lead. What happened next was a finish that had the fans whooping, cheering, yelling, and cringing all at once.
First there was contact between the two in turns three and four approaching the white flag. The "spirited" battle raged on down the front straight with the two continuing to trade paint under the waiving white flag and into turns one and two. In turn two it appeared as though the two leaders literally got hooked together; the car on the outside pointed towards the infield, and the car on the inside pointed towards the outside retaining wall.
With the two leaders seemingly locked in their own battle, Mondovi, WI's Danny Richards took advantage of the opportunity and simply whizzed on past both of them to steal the lead and the eventual win. As Richards basked in the glow of the feature win while racing under the fluttering checkered flag, Mann and Hanson were still at it in turns three and four, continuing to pound on each other in the battle that was now more about survival that winning. Hanson slipped past for second with Mann being relegated to third.
After the dust had settled, Richards was the only one smiling, "I wouldn't have gotten (the win) if it wasn't for them bumping together, " Richards said. "They helped me get back in it over the last two laps." When asked what he was thinking as the two leaders commenced taking each other out of the top spot, Richards replied with a smile, "I was just hoping that they wouldn't spin out completely, otherwise there'd be a restart, one of them would get their spot back, and I'd lose the lead I'd just gotten."
As for Hanson and Mann, it depended upon with whom you were speaking later on in the evening. Suffice it to say, that the historical battle between the Hatfields and McCoys may end up looking like nothing more than a simple miss-understanding if these two racers can't shake hands and let bygones be bygones before the next time they hit the track!
TOMMY RICHARDS MAKES A DOUBLE FOR RICHARDS RACING
After watching Danny Richards sneak away with the WISSOTA Street Stock feature win, Tommy Richards knew that he was going to have to work extra hard behind the wheel of his #7R Super Stock in order for fans to remember his on-track presence as well.
Lined up on the outside of the fourth row for the 20-lap Coordinated Business Systems Super Stock feature, Richards' hopes were definitely up for a challenge, and what a challenge it was as lined up ahead of him were all three heat-race winners from earlier in the evening, Shane Kisling, Kelly Anderson and Dan Bork, along with two-time and defending track champion Jeff Brauer.
Richards battled outside the top five for the first half of the main event, before jumping up to second on lap 12. The final eight laps were Kisling and Richards battling for the win, with Richards taking the lead on lap 15, Kisling resuming his hold on the top spot for lap 18 and then Richards stepping back out front for the final two circuits to grab the checkered flag.
Kisling was forced to settle for second with Dan Bork enjoying his best night, in this is rookie season behind the wheel of a WISSOTA Super Stock, rounding out the top-three.
PROVINZINO PREVAILS
Joe Provinzino held on, literally, in order to capture his track leading 7th feature win of the 2012 season. A late race thumping during a challenge for the lead in turn two turned Provinzino's JoeProvoRaceWear.com #89 almost completely sideways, forcing the Chanhassen, MN driver to grab a handful of steering wheel and muscle his car back into position in order to hold onto the lead and collect the eventual feature win.
Two-time feature winner Curt Luhmann finished second just ahead of Bob Cisewski.
The three car battle for the win went right down to the waving checkered flag with Provinzino grabbing the win and then making an offer to the crowd, "This division is very competitive and a whole lot of fun. Anyone who wants to get behind the wheel of a very strong 600 Mod should call me because this car IS for sale."
BUCKLAND AND WASMUND LIGHT UP "THE LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY"
Dylan Buckland proved that he can drive a Mini Mod, picking up his fifth feature win in the Sunshine Sanitation A Mini Mod division, while JT Wasmund took the checkered flag in the Sunshine Sanitation B Mini Mod feature.
MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY's 2012 season continues next Friday night July 13th with the very first green-flag appearance of the Bumper To Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Cars! In addition to the Sprint Cars on-track action will also include the River City Manufacturing USRA Modifieds, Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stocks, Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks, & M.T.S.
