KELLY SHRYOCK ENJOYS VICTORIOUS UNVIELING AT MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY

August 24, 2012

By Dan Bailey
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (August 24, 2012) – The name Kelly Shryock is synonymous with winning; the well-known statistic of 9 USMTS National Championships backed by over 370 feature wins lets every racer and race fan know that when he shows up at the track with his #3, he's a threat for the win. Anyone who follows Modified racing also knows of his Skyrocket chassis, which have also become synonymous with winning; being used by modified drivers throughout America to help other drivers reach Victory Lane as well.
Friday August 24th Shryock arrived at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY not only to race, but also to give the racing world the very first official on-track unveiling of the brand new 2013 Skyrocket chassis. To say that things couldn't have gone any better would be an understatement.
Starting from the outside of the sixth row in the evenings Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified feature, Shryock wasted no time heading towards the front of the 21-car field. While many expected pole-sitter Brad Waits to manage the front spot, such was not to be the case as the black #24 of Waits lasted just two laps before heading to the hauler as an early race DNF. It was outside pole sitter Chris Gilbertson leading the opening two laps before being replaced out front by the #90 of Steve Wetzstein. Wetzstein, however, also dropped out early, enjoying just two laps out front before himself heading to his hauler and calling it a night.
This turned the lead over to 2009 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Champion John Doelle, who set the pace out front for the following six circuits. But behind this trio of race leaders, the aforementioned #3 of Shryock was passing cars and heading towards the front. On lap eleven, the 2013 Skyrocket chassis #3, with Shryock behind the wheel, took the lead for its very first feature lap led, and never looked back. The remainder of the race was Shryock stretching the lead and the rest of the pack battling for those positions from second on back.
"Couldn't have asked for much more of a perfect unveiling of our 2013 car," Shryock responded to questions while celebrating in Victory Lane, "We've spent a lot of time making sure that we're continuing to build the best chassis we can, and a feature win on the first night out for our 2013 shows that the Skyrocket is still the way to get to Victory Lane."
Behind Shryock, 2012 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY points leader Lucas Schott battled his way into second on lap 19 and began picking away at the lead that Shryock had established but simply ran out of laps and had to settle for second. Second heat race winner Dan Bohr moved his "Dan's Standard" #66 into third on lap 22 and stayed there until the checkered flag waived, with Dover, MN's Jay Ihrke and Doelle completing the top 5.
HILLMAN POWERS HIS WAY TO FIRST MTS FEATURE WIN
It was a smiling Ben Hillman who climbed from the interior of his #22JR following Friday nights Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock feature; and why not, he'd just collected his very first feature in at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY!
Early on it looked like early season point leader Shane Kisling was finally going to find his way back to Victory Lane, jumping from the outside of the second row, Kisling lead the opening eleven laps of the 20-lap feature with his familiar #6. Things changed quickly on the following lap as Hillman, who'd moved into second on lap seven, exited turn two directly behind Kisling. As Hillman moved from the extreme low line in the turns, headed towards the outside line on the back straight and Kisling exited turn two in a somewhat defensive line towards the middle lane, the two cars touched, nose to tail. Kisling's car was loosened up just enough to allow Hillman to shoot past and take the lead. "Things got tight back there in turn two," explained Hillman after celebrating the win, "Shane's a great driver and there was nothing intentional back there."
Kisling then had his hands full with challenges from Kelly Anderson, Tommy Richards and Defending MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Champion Jeff Brauer. Anderson relieved Kisling of second on lap 16 relegating Kisling to a third place finish with Richards and then Brauer completing the top-5 just behind him for fourth and fifth respectively.
Hillman, as expected, was ecstatic with the win, "We're one of the only Mopar powered Super Stocks on the track these days," explained Hillman after pumping his fists in the air to celebrate the win, "It's something my Dad started, and it's great to use that power for my first feature win here at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY!"
WALSKI PUTS THE REST OF THE B-MOD DRIVERS ON NOTICE WITH CONVINCING FEATURE WIN
Before Friday night's races even hit the track, Winona's Shaun Walski was feeling confident - not only for the evening's races, but also for the upcoming $10,000 to win Baehman Law B-Mod Nationals scheduled at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY for September 6th, 7th and 8th. "We've made some adjustments over the past few weeks that have really helped," explained Walski on the pre-race "Live Track" radio program, "I think we've got a strong car for tonight and hopefully also for the big special coming up in September."
Walski's black and orange #95 was indeed strong Friday night, powering him to a "Clean Sweep" of the evening's TheEngineStore.com USRA B-Mod program winning both the third heat-race and the evening's 18-lap feature.
It only took two laps for Walski to find his way to the top spot; after starting inside of the second row, he relieved pole sitter Matt Jones of the lead on lap two and never once looked back - or was even directly challenged, really. Walski looked smooth strong and fast as he opened up a convincing lead and enjoyed it all the way to the waiving checkered flag.
Iowa's Brian Mahlstedt showed his power, after winning the evening's first heat-race as he worked his way through traffic from his starting spot in the fourth row up to a strong second place finish ahead of multi-feature winner, and fourth heat-race winner, Jacob Bleess, current MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY point leader Erik Kanz and IMCA star, and second heat-race winner, Austin Kaplan who finished second through fifth respectively.
MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY continues to be the track of choice for B-Mod racers right now, as drivers are using these last few weeks of the regular season to visit the track in hopes of gathering experience and set-up notes to make themselves competitive for the upcoming $10,000 to win special in September. Friday nights 28 car field for a regular weekly event was a great showing . . . but, still only a fraction of the 100+ drivers who've already pre-registered for the three-day special! Continue visiting the official MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY web site (www.MississippiThunder.com) for all the details related to the $10,000 to win Baehman Law B-Mod Nationals scheduled for September 6th, 7th & 8th!
RICHARDS RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE
Mondovi, WI's Danny Richards returned to his winning ways Friday night, rolling his #3R back into Victory Lane after inheriting the lead from Keith Tourville, who's #111JR went up in smoke on unlucky-lap 13 following seven laps out front.
Tourville had taken the lead from Fred Prudoehl, who'd led the opening six laps, and looked ready to steal the spotlight away from the cast of regular weekly MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stock competitors until his feature ended early in a smoky haze. That turned the battle up front back to first heat-race winner Richards, current point leader Doug Wojcik, second heat-race winner Mike Conrad and mid-season point leader Cory Hanson.
The four battled out front with the race for the win coming down to Wojcik and Richards on the final few laps. Separated by inches the two crossed the finish line with only a tenth of a second between Richards #3R and Wojcik's #3D. Conrad beat Hanson to the line for third with the previous Friday night's feature winner Travis Krause completing the top-5.
WOHLETZ WOWS 'EM WITH FORTH FEATURE WIN IN FOUR WEEKS
What a difference a month can make. Up to the start of August, the Redbox+ 600 Modified division was virtually owned by the #89 of Joe Provinzino. Collecting 8 feature wins up through the beginning of the eighth month of the year, it looked like the Joe Provo express was going to wrap up a track championship. Then Greg Wohletz found his stride, and things haven't been the same since!
For the fourth time in as many weeks, Joe Provinzino has had to watch someone else celebrate in Victory lane - and that someone else is Wohletz. Wohletz's red and yellow #32 jumped from the pole Friday night and won in convincing fashion leading all fifteen laps of the feature to collect the win. Bruce Schmitt showed that the 600 Mod division is NOT a 'freight train' group as he worked his #80 up to a strong second place finish after starting on the inside of the fourth row and battling through the crowd.
Provinzino, first heat race winner Bob Cisewski and Curt Luhmann finished out the top-5 of the fourteen car field.
DUBOIS, STEVENS & WILLIAMSON ALSO WINNERS
"SECOND FEATURE WIN!" Shouted a smiling Larry Dubois as he rolled his #22 Elmer's Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stock into Victory Lane. The Winona racer stayed out front despite several challenges from the competition to collect the evening's Pure Stock feature win.
Alex Stevens grabbed his third feature win in the Sunshine Sanitation A Midwest Mini Mod feature while Devin Williamson raced his way to the feature win in the Sunshine Sanitation B Midwest Mini Mod feature event.
MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY's 2012 season continues Friday night August 31st with Season Championship night presented by NAPA Auto Parts of Winona! Action on the fast 1/3 mile speedway will wrap up the 2012 points battles for all regular weekly divisions; the Sunshine Sanitation A and B Midwest Mini Mods get the evening started on the "Lightning Speedway", supporting competition on the fast 1/3-mile comprised of complete programs for the River City Manufacturing USRA Modifieds, Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stocks, TheEngineStore.com USRA B-Mods, Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks, REDBOX+ 600 Mods, & Elmer's Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stocks.
