HOULE, KISLING, MOUDRY, & HANSON ARE VICTORY LANE VISITORS ON FASTENAL NIGHT AT MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY

June 7, 2013

By Dan Bailey
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (June 7, 2013) – The racing community in West-Central Wisconsin are probably Fastenal would be weekly event sponsors at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. Throughout this hit and miss start to the 20113 racing season, it seems that Mother Nature had gotten into an 'every other week' schedule of allowing on-track action at the fast 1/3-mile oval in Fountain City, WI. But this Friday night, Fastenal put together the whole package to bring to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, a packed grand stands of fans, a near uncountable number of prizes, the Carl Edwards #99 Fastenal sponsored Roush Fenway Racing's 2013 Sprint Cup car, and, yes, blue skies and sunshine!
And even after that sun had set, you could say that the sun was still shining on Ham Lake, MN's Jeremy Houle. Just two weeks into his ownership of a new Mars car Modified, and on his first ever visit to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, Houle politely accepted a gift and ended his evening celebrating in Victory Lane. Let's roll the tape back and discover the chain of events that led up to Houle's celebration.
Earlier in the evening Houle had spent the first River City Manufacturing USRA Modified heat race learning the track and sliding his way to a fourth place finish. Meanwhile, Rochester, MN speed-demon Brad Waits dominated the second heat race and cruised to an unchallenged win.
Feature time appeared to be a set up for much the same. With Waits starting on the outside of the front row, along side current speedway point leader Jake Timm, the drop of the green flag was like an invitation for a rapid departure to Waits. With the right pedal down, Waits' black NFG #24 left the competition behind and almost immediately stretched a lead to an entire straightaway advantage over the rest of the field which were left battling for scraps of positions two and beyond.
Lap after Lap, Waits stretched his lead on the field and if the FASTENAL 25 USRA Modified Feature had only been the FASTENAL 19 USRA Modified Feature, Waits would have been a feature winner. But 25 laps was distance, and Waits Modified decided that it only had 19 laps in it for Fastenal Night at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY.
As Waits crossed the start/finish line on lap 19, it was obvious that things weren't sounding right beneath the hood. The next time Waits crossed the start/finish line it was without power as he coasted the remainder of the front stretch and came to a stop at the top of the banking in between turns one and two, giving up a nearly half lap lead over the rest of the field.
This is, of course, the aforementioned 'gift' that Houle received, as his #54 was running a strong second at the time. Six laps later he was in Victory Lane celebrating HIS win of the FASTENAL 25 USRA Modified Feature, "A lot of things can happen in racing," said Houle, "We'll take it."
Houle was ecstatic with the win, after starting sixth (outside row three) he spent the first 10 laps battling his way into the top three, just behind Decorah, IA's Dan Bohr. On lap 15 Houle was finally able to get around Bohr for second, and just four laps later he was inheriting the lead en route to his first ever win on his first ever visit to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. But by no means was it an easy road to victory, as a caution and restart forced Houle to hold off challenges for the win, "I was a little worried when we had that third restart," Houle said. "I saw the 99 (Angst) and 49 (Timm) coming, but was able to hold them off."
Houle loaded up his hauler a new fan of MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, "I'd never been here before, never even seen the place." Explained the newest feature winner, "but I'd seen everyone talking about it on the internet, saying how great the track and facilities are. Now that I've been here . . . it's safe to say that I'll be back again."
Bohr held on for second almost 3 seconds behind Houle's #54 with first heat race winner Bob Timm battling his way to a third place finish from his tenth place start.
KISLING KING OF THE CASH
After yet another rain out the week before, the Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock drivers were once again racing for extra money, with the quite popular "Pay It Forward" bonus money doubling up for the third time this season. Coordinated Business Systems, Kyocera & J-Mev Motorsports have guaranteed a $200 bonus, each regular Friday night of racing, to the winner of the Super Stock feature. If a regular weekly event is rained out, that bonus is rolled forward to the next regular weekly event and added to that week's $200 bonus. Brauer Roofing, Inc has joined this bonus program for 2013 and guaranteed $100 to the second place finisher and $50 to the third place finisher. So the Super Stock drivers were racing for a $400 winner's bonus, $200 second place bonus and $100 third place bonus in and above the regularly posted purse!
Much like a shark that can sense blood in the water, whenever there's extra money to be won, Sarona, WI's Shane Kisling brought his #6 to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY and loaded up at the end of the night with a $750 payday for his evening of efforts. Kisling lead all 20 laps of the Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock feature, but raced beneath the flying checkered flag just three quarters of a second ahead of two-time track champion Jeff Brauer in second.
Behind the top two, 2009 track champion Gary Wiersgalla raced his way to a third place finish with Dan Bork and Jon Duffy rounding out the top-5.
In Victory Lane, Kisling explained his recent changes while searching for victory, "We started the season with Chevy power under the hood, but we've switched to MOPAR power, and this Dodge engine is what got us the win tonight!"
MOUDRY MOTORS TO B-MOD FEATURE WIN
Cottage Grove, MN's Ben Moudry raced his way through a trio of cautions, and resultant restarts, to capture the win of the 21-car Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod feature. While Moudry raced his way to the win from his starting spot on the inside of the second row, three other drivers were slicing and dicing their way through traffic to improve their finishing positions over their starting spots.
Three members of the 'youth brigade' were on the move through the pack; and this trio of teenaged B-Mod super stars showed that they were intent on moving forward. Alex Williamson piloted his #15W to a second place finish after starting outside of the third row. Previous feature winner Jacob Bleess moved forward from his tenth place starting spot to a fourth place finish behind a very fact Chris Gilbertson. Meanwhile Jake Timm turned a 17th place starting spot into a 9th place finish.
HANSON AND WOJCIK START A NEW RIVALRY
Who would have thought that a seven car feature would have the crowd on their feet and be the center of discussions throughout the rest of the evening - if not the rest of the week! Former WISSOTA National Champion, and multi-time MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY track champion Danny Hanson looked ready to cruise his way to another feature win. Defending MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY track champion had other thoughts. The final five laps of the 18-lap Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stock feature contained more contact than an UFC bout!
Hanson had the lead, Wojcik had the momentum. That scenario was destine to bring the two together in a hard fought battle for the win that brought the crowd in the packed grand stands to their feet. Wojcik erased a lengthy lead held by Hanson by closing in on Hanson's familiar #5 from several car-lengths back to set up the challenge for the top spot. What followed was an amazing race ending duel of slide jobs, door bangs, tire thumps, bumper rubs, lane changes, blocking maneuvers, and post-race finger gestures that didn't have anything to do with where each driver finished.
Both drivers are very well known for their speed, but are also well known by both fans and fellow drivers, for their usually clean, close and respectful driving. No one knows what turned the tables over this weekend, and the two set aside their normal behavior and basically put a bar-fight finish on display for the crowd.
Hanson made his thoughts very clear in Victory Lane, "I think someone forgot that you have to pass by going around a car, and not through it." We'll see if Wojcik has a response during next week's Street Stock feature. Fred Prudoehl, Shaun Mann and Andrew Ausman completed the top-5.
PROVINZINO AND SWEAZEY GRAB WINS
After finishing second to Don Werner in the evenings first heat race, Joe Provinzino turned the tables and built up a commanding lead in the Redbox+ 600 Modified feature on way to the win. 18 laps after the start, along the way setting the evenings fastest lap time (16.011 seconds - 84.317 mph average lap speed), Provinzino enjoyed a more than 2 second lead over Werner as the checkered flag waived. In Victory Lane, Provinzino wasted no time redirecting the attention from himself to others, "More important than my win, I just want to say thank you to all of these fans in the stands and Fastenal for putting together such a great night for everyone. It's great to look up there and see a packed house."
Provinzino's smile did fade a bit though as he turned away from the crowd and noticed a quickly growing pool of oil beneath his 600 Modified, "That wasn't there when I pulled in here, was it? Looks like I've got work ahead of me."
Defending track champion Greg Wohletz finished behind Werner in third.
Winona's Paul Sweazey worked his way from outside of the third row to take over the lead of the Elmer's Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stock feature, and then motored his way to the win. Lee Hager and current point leader Bobby Fort, Jr. rounded out the top three.
STEVENS, LARSON & POOL ARE LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY WINNERS
Alex Stevens lead the entire Sunshine Sanitation A-Mini Mod feature on the Lightning Speedway on way to the feature win ahead of Keagen Einck.
Jayden Larson made the trip over from Mankato, MN to clean house in the stacked 11-car Sunshine Sanitation B-Mini mod division. Coming from deep in the starting line-up, Larson passed pole sitter Devin Williamson for the feature win.
Buzz Pool pulled in from points unknown to steal the Outlaw Mini Mod feature ahead of Scott Johnson and Matthew Schliesman.
If Mother Nature intends to cooperate two weeks in a row, racing will resume Friday night June 14th with Winona County night at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY.
MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY is located 3.0 miles north of Fountain City on Wisconsin Highway 35. For more information, call 608-687-3282 or visit www.mississippithunder.com on the World Wide Web.
