RODEWALD, TIMM, WAITS, WOJCIK VISIT VICTORY LANE AT MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY

FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (June 28, 2013) – Race fans flocked to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY in Fountain City, WI Friday night to enjoy the fun and pageantry which is Winona Radio / Budweiser Night - as an event which originally started back in the late '80s, it's one of the longest running, if not THE longest running, racing event promotions in the area, and fans know the fun factor will be high. This year, despite a late afternoon shower, the fun for the fans in the packed grandstands was indeed high; matched, perhaps, only by the on-track excitement which unfolded before them on the super-fast 1/3 mile.
Much of the talk at the end of the evening concerned the start of the Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod Feature. As the pack came roaring out of turn four on the opening lap, the field drifted high on front straight. Driver opinions varied as to where the action actually began, but the #4G of Trempealeau, WI racer Chris Gilbertson, starting on the outside of the third row, was forced into the front straight concrete wall just before the starter's flag stand at the start finish line.
As sparks filled the air the rest of the field behind continued at full speed into the growing confusion. In a scene similar to a growing wreck on a super-speedway, the crowd of cars involved in the growing wreck continued to grow as the group spun and skidded the remainder of the front straight and towards the bottom of the banking in turn one.
Second heat race winner Alex Williamson, currently battling Gilbertson atop the point standings was almost directly behind Gilbertson and was immediately swept into the wreck. When the smoke cleared, Gilbertson's orange and black modified was on its roof with Williamson's #15W sandwiched in the middle of the multi-car pack which had come to rest at the end of the front straight.
While Gilbertson's night was immediately over, and Williamson would only complete a total of 5 laps after spending a lot of time in the 'work area' of the pits with his pit crew trying to fix the damage, the best news was that all drivers involved were OK. Gilbertson minced no words with his post incident comments, "(This is the) side effect of people who can't hold a line around a race track", said Gilbertson afterwards, referring to the driver he thought was at fault for the incident, "(he) drove me up the track into the wall in front of basically the whole field."
Thankfully, all drivers involved were OK.
The remainder of the 18 lap feature featured several great battles up front as Jake Timm held off challenges first from his good friend Parker Hale, and then by defending Track Champion and second heat race winner Erik Kanz as well as Multi-time WISSOTA National Champion Cory Crapser. "This win is so great," commented Timm, after rolling his #10 into Victory Lane, "Cory was challenging me and I knew that I was going to have to work hard to stay out front." When asked about racing Hale for the lead through the first 14 laps Timm's reaction was enjoyable, "Parker and I have been great friends ever since we both started racing against each other in Mini-Mods right here on The LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY . . . it was great racing him for the lead."
Crapser finished second with Kanz rounding out the top-3.
RODEWALD RIDES HIGH TO FIRST MTS FEATURE WIN
"Can my Dad come down here to Victory Lane?" were the first words out of Lake City, MN driver Josh Rodewald's mouth when he pulled his helmet off in Victory Lane following Friday night's 20 lap Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock feature.
Rodewald had just held off a fierce challenge for the win by Kelly Anderson and defending Track Champion Tommy Richards to grab his first ever MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Feature win, "this isn't my first feature win ever," said Rodewald, "but it's my first here at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER, and it feels great!"
Rodewald and Anderson's battle for the lead, and eventual win, lasted the entire 20 lap feature with both drivers committed to the ultra-high line around the fast 1/3 Mile Dark Clay oval. Lap after lap Anderson would tuck the nose of his #8 J-Mev Motorsports entry right under the rear of Rodewald's #17. Almost every lap Anderson would take a peak to the inside, often in turn two, in an attempt to get up alongside of the race leader, but Rodewald's momentum quickly nixed every challenge Anderson offered.
Meanwhile, Richards kept his #7R as low as possible and was able, on several occasions, to get up alongside of Anderson to challenge for second and provide a great three-car battle for the lead, but eventually the high-line speeds won out, literally, as Rodewald and Anderson finished first and second ahead of Richards. "Kelly and I are good friends. We pit next to each other all the time." Said Rodewald after the win, "I know he's a great driver, and I knew he was going to challenge me for the lead every chance he could."
Second heat race winner, and two-time Track Champion Jeff Brauer finished fourth while pole sitter Lucas Plank held off Gary Wiersgalla for fifth.
DEFENDING CHAMPION WOJCIK BACK IN VICTORY LANE
No fewer than 7 drivers battle for position at the front of the tight Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stock field in an attempt to find time out front. Front row starters Shaun Mann and Andrew Ausman were almost immediately three wide with Danny Richards as the green flag waived to send the pack into battle for the evening's 18 lap feature.
Mann's #01 was exceptionally fast and lead the opening three circuits before defending Track Champion Doug Wojcik and former Track (and WISSOTA National) Champion Danny Hanson joined the battle with second heat race winner Cody Kummer, Richards and Fred Prudoehl filling out the pack.
Mann, first heat race winner Wojcik and Hanson battled fiercely, yet cleanly, for the lead through the final 15 laps often times thrilling the full-house with three-wide action. The success of which was not lost on Wojcik when asked about the racing in Victory Lane after holding on for the win, "Yeah, you know, I really should be congratulating all the guys in this race. That's the way we like to run, hard for the lead, but look, not a scratch or dent on the car; 'cause I don't think we ever touched out there tonight."
Mann held on for second with Hanson settling for a positive third place finish just two weeks after the much talked about wreck which totaled his main car on the front straight of MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY.
WERNER WOWs 'EM WITH 600 MOD FEATURE WIN
"Let me tell you something," smiled Rollingstone, MN's Don Werner, after winning the Redbox+ 600 Modified feature, "we should all be cheering the track crew tonight, because they worked hard after this afternoon's rain and WOW, THAT TRACK IS FAST!"
After winning the evening's first heat race, Werner jumped from his fourth row starting position in the feature and spent the first eight laps working his way towards the front. On lap nine he moved his #99 around defending Track Champion Greg Wohletz' #32, who'd led since taking the top spot from Pole Sitter Brian Laumeyer on lap two, and never once looked back.
Werner built up a one second lead over Wohletz and held on for the win, with Liquid Nitro driver Kyle Jumbeck moving through the pack from his ninth place starting spot to finish third.
WAITS RETURNS FOR USRA MODIFIED WIN
After winning the night's second heat race, Brad Waits' used a pole position starting spot to step away from the pack to pick up the 25-lap Winona Radio / Budweiser feature win at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. While Waits was leading the pack, first heat race winner Lucas Schott came from inside the third row and completely erased the large lead Waits had built up. Schott, the defending Track Champion at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, closed to within ½ a second of Waits' #24, but simple ran out of laps before he could throw a solid challenge for position at the leader.
Waits took the win, with Schott second and 2010 Track Champion Josh Angst finishing third.
JASON HAVEL WINS PURE STOCK FEATURE
"This is, without a doubt, the BEST track I've ever been too!" shouted Jason Havel after winning this Elmer's Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stock feature. "I've raced all over the upper Midwest," continued the Rice Lake, WI native, "Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, you name it. And this place is the best."
Havel moved his #5 from the third row in the 15-car field to take the lead and hold on for the win with first heat race winner Dustin Doughty and current point leader Bobby Fort, Jr. completing the top-3 as they crossed the finish line beneath the waiving checkered flag.
HALE AND LaDUKE WIN MINI-MOD FEATURES ON LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY
Jackson Hale raced his way to his second straight Sunshine Sanitation A Mini Mod feature win on The LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY while Matthew LaDuke topped the competition to win the B Mini Mod feature.
MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY races back to action next Friday night July 5th with the 5th Annual River City Rumble including a potential $3500 paycheck for the winner of the River City Manufacturing USRA Modified feature and up to $3100 to win, with pre-registered bonus, for the Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod feature. There's extra money on the line for all other divisions competing and the fans will get in on the fun as well with on-sight DJ music and prizes including bikes for the kids and five (5) flat-screen TVs!
