FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (July 05, 2013) – For the fifth year in a row, River City Manufacturing and R & R Machining owners Steve and Kevin Reutzel joined MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY to roll out the red carpet for both racers and fans alike by presenting the Fifth Annual River City Rumble! Drivers started submitting pre-registration slips several weeks before the July 5th event and by the time race night rolled around close to 70 modified drivers were ready to hit the track to battle for their share of the increased payout for the night's feature finishers!
The River City Manufacturing USRA Modified division wowed the crowd with fast laps, close competition and nearly 30 of the best A-Mod racers the class has to offer. When the evening's River City Manufacturing 35-lap Main event hit the track there were no fewer than 17 National Championships, 3 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Championships, and an almost uncountable number of other Track Championships represented on the super-fast 1/3 mile.
The 26-car USRA Modified field took the green flag for the race to the $3000 pay check being awarded to the feature winner; unfortunately for several of the competitors, the night was filled with bad luck. Four racers, including 5-time WISSOTA National Champion Craig Thatcher failed to complete even a single lap, while six more (including 2009 MTS Track Champion John Doelle, first heat race winner Eric Pember & USMTS Star Rodney Sanders) only completed three laps before heading to their haulers.
But once the early race 'caution fever' was put behind them, the remaining drivers attacked the track with enthusiasm and skill and put on a show for the packed grandstands. A majority of the field, including front row starters Brandon Davis and Brad Waits stuck to the bottom groove relying on the moisture laid down in a pre-race watering. But while some freight-trained around the oval at the bottom of the banking, there were a few brave souls who hung it out and ran the top of the banking; 2012 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY track champion Lucas Schott ran that extreme high line all the way to third place and once into the top three spent the rest of the feature stalking the top two.
While Waits tried time and again to get even lower than race leader Davis, who was already running the low groove, Schott used a unique combination of the high, middle and low grooves attempting to challenge for any advantage he could find. While hanging out in that top groove, Schott turned in the evening's fastest time - a blistering 16.044 second lap that made him the class of the field.
But a win wasn't in the books for either Schott or Waits, as Davis put together a 'clean sweep' on the evening - after winning the third heat race, he zipped to the $3000 pay day by pulling out to a .5 second lead and winning the main event. Celebrating in Victory Lane after the win, the 2010 National Champion admitted to a pretty straight forward plan that brought him the win, "When I saw all the moisture down on the bottom I knew that was the way to the win."
2007 USMTS National Champion, and second heat race winner, Jason Krohn halved his starting position of eighth and raced to a fourth place finish while 2010 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Champion Josh Angst held on to claim the final spot in the top-5 finishing spots.
HOVEY STEALS $2500 B-MOD FEATURE WIN
Coming into Friday's River City Rumble, Decorah, IA's Troy Hovey had already been enjoying a 9 feature-win start to his 2013 season. By the end of the night, he'd have the crowd on their feet compliments of his last-lap turn-4 pass for the lead and the win!
Through five heat races and two last-chance B-Mains, the crowd watched the Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod action to determine the 26-car starting line-up for the 30-lap main.
Starting from the outside of the front row, Parson, KS racer Jeremy Chambers stepped out front and led the first 23 laps of the feature before giving way to fourth heat-race winner Jacob Bleess. Bleess, who made a habit of winning high-dollar specials in 2012 at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, looked ready to repeat his winning ways as he put his #21 out front.
But Hovey was on a mission. Starting from the outside of the fourth row, he'd been slowly but surely making his way towards the front through the entire 30-lap main. Early on his attention was dominated by a battle with third heat-race winner Alex Williamson, two time USRA B-Mod National Champion, and second heat-race winner, Brandon Hare and first heat-race winner Jon Van Minsel.
After dispensing with those battles for position, Hovey caught a huge break on his way to the front when three-time WISSOTA National Champion Cory Crapser, who looked fast enough to claim the win, suffered a lap 20 flat tire after a tangle with a lapped car while battling Chambers for the lead.
But, regardless of 'what might have been scenarios', the truth remains that a race's winner is the car running out front when the checkered flag waives, and Hovey was determined to be that driver of the car out front.
With a drive and determination, Hovey caught Bleess and presented a story-book last-lap turn-four pass for the lead and the win! "The track was perfect, and fast and that battle at the end was fun", commented Hovey after the win. When asked about the stellar start to the 2013 season that he's enjoyed he was the first to pass credit elsewhere, "Yeah, ten feature wins already; but I'm not smart enough to make that happen, all the credit goes to my pit crew who put all the work into this car and give me a great ride every time I'm on the track!"
Bleess had to settle for a heart-braking second place finish while Williamson was elated with the strong charge to third.
WIERSGALLA WINS WISSOTA SUPER STOCK FEATURE
Local racer Gary Wiersgalla has been headed in the right direction through the first half of the 2013 season. After a disappointing 2012, the 2009 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Champion has been back in winning form, racing at or near the front of the field again this year.
So, it was no surprise Friday night when the crowd in the grandstands roared with approval as Wiersgalla moved his #52 into the lead on lap 12 of the 20-lap feature. After winning the evening's second heat race and starting sixth in the feature line-up, Wiersgalla worked through the field and relieved two-time MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Champion Jeff Brauer of the lead and raced to the feature win!
"You know, it's been a lot of work to get back here", said a jubilant Wiersgalla as he celebrated in Victory Lane in front of a with a wildly approving crowd in the grandstands, "The car has been good all year, and tonight that top groove was so fast. When I started moving towards the front I thought, 'Hey, I might have something for 'em here tonight'." Wiersgalla, who lives literally 'right down the street' from the track - less than a mile from the track he's called 'home' since he first strapped into a race car - basked in the glow of the approving cheers of the crowd and smiled brightly while thrusting his fists into the air to mark the victory!
Brauer held on for second ahead of Kelly Anderson in third, defending MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Champion Tommy Richards in fourth and Joey Jensen completing the top-5.
WOJCIK WINS STREET FEATURE AGAIN
Doug Wojcik is on a roll again; in defense of his 2012 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Championship, the Ladysmith, WI racer has put together another strong run collecting multiple feature wins to climb in the current season Jailhouse Saloon Street Stock point standings.
Friday night, he again put together a 'clean sweep' winning the evening's first heat race, before holding off challenges for the feature win by both former National and MTS Track Champion Danny Hanson, local hot-shoe Shaun Mann as well as his own brother Nick Wojcik.
Doug Wojcik held the top spot for the entirety of the main event on way to winning the feature, followed across the line by his brother Nick, Mann and second heat-race winner Fred Prudoehl.
The Street Stock portion of the evening's program was marred early in the night when on the opening lap of the opening heat-race, fan favorite Jane Keating slammed nose first into the turn-one outside wall at full speed! A fifteen to twenty minute lull hushed the crowd as speedway safety personnel attended to Keating inside of her #86 Street Stock. Thankfully Jane was finally able to climb from her car, with assistance from safety personnel and slowly and gingerly walked under her own power to the awaiting safety vehicle.
Late in the evening trusted sources mentioned that Jane may have a long road to recovery ahead of her with a back injury. All members of the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY management, staff and fan base offer their thoughts and prayers to Jane Keating for a complete and successful recovery.
CISEWSKI HOLDS OFF PROVINZINO FOR 600 MOD WIN
Bob Cisewski had his work cut out for him. He had his Ace Auto #40 Modified out front of the Redbox+ 600 Modified field during the evening's 18-lap feature; but right behind him was the black #89 of Joe Provinzino. Any time Provinzino is on the track, he's a threat for the win . . . and time and time again, 'Joe Provo' has made it look almost easy to pass for the lead and walk away from the field.
But not so this evening; Cisewski ran an absolutely flawless race and fended off multiple challenges by Provinzino, to grab his second feature win of the 2013 season! Defending Track Champion Greg Wohletz followed Provinzino across the line in third with current point leader Don Werner in fourth.
CHISHOLM AND STEVENS ARE MINI-MOD WINNERS ON THE LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY
Alex Stevens won a wild Sunshine Sanitation A Mini-Mod feature on The Lightning Speedway that saw a near amazing incident with young Keagen Einck. Closing in on the final laps, Einck's #66 got sideways between turns three and four. As Einck's Mini-Mod slid, the right-side tires caught and Einck's ride left the ground and did a complete 360 degree barrel roll IN MID AIR before dropping back to earth and landing again on all four tires!
In the early evening B Mini-Mod feature Joe Chisholm bested the 12-car field to win the feature!
