FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (August 02, 2013) – With August breaking the day before, MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY racers and fans entered the final month of regular season action at the fast 1/3-Mile oval. Kwik Trip invited any and all to turn out for the second 'Fan Appreciation' night of 2013, and turn out they did - a full grand stands greeted those racers who prepared to attack the track and their competition.
The River City Manufacturing USRA Modified feature began with a familiar name in an unfamiliar place, Winonan Brian Albrecht has been behind the wheel of a stock car for many years . . . but it had been a while since race fans were able to enjoy seeing his familiar #6T7 out front. Not only did Albrecht enjoy some time out front, for the first ten laps he held off none other than Brad Waits and every challenge he could offer with his black NFG #24.
Not only did Albrecht hold off Waits' advances for the first ten circuits, he also turned in the fasted lap of the 'Kwik Trip 25' feature, a 16.705 second lap which remained the quickest of the night. But eventually, Waits was able to wrestle the lead away from Albrecht and hold the top spot on way to his third River City Manufacturing USRA Modified feature win of the 2013 season at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY.
In victory Lane, Waits was the first to offer congrats to Albrecht's strong start, "It's always nice to see someone like Albrecht spend some time out front - it did take some work to get past him."
Behind Waits, the action was fast and furious as the fans were offered another treat, that of watching Lee Roy Scharkey spend the first 13 laps battling for position within the top-5. While Albrecht slipped to an eventual 9th place finish, Scharkey held on for a sixth place finish behind second heat race winner Jake Timm in fifth, Tom Brink in fourth and two former track champions in second and third. 2010 Track champion Josh Angst worked around 2011 Track Champion Bob Timm on lap 21 for second.
RICHARDS STEALS THE GLORY FROM ORICCHIO
Similar to the Modified main, fans were treated to the sight of a new competitor our front of the Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock feature. After winning the evening's second heat race, Jay Oricchio started from the outside of the front row with his #37 and lead the first 15 laps of the 20 lap feature.
Unfortunately, Oricchio lost the lead to defending Track Champion Tommy Richards who snuck between Oricchio running the outside line at the top of the banking and former two-time Track Champion Jeff Brauer who was running the extreme inside groove.
Richards zipped through the middle and led the final five laps to grab the feature win. Brauer add the second place finish to his heat race win from earlier in the evening, while Shatney Sanders put on quite a display racing his #42 from an inside sixth row starting spot to an impressive third place finish.
BLEESS BEST IN B-MODS
Jacob Bleess used a pole position starting spot to win the Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod Feature. "Track was great and the car was fast." was all the soft spoken racer had to say as he celebrated the win in Victory Lane.
While Bleess' win was a flag to flag run, behind him, the battles were fierce. Dan Wheeler and Jon Van Minsel put on a great performance as they both battle each other while working through the pack; Wheeler coming from a third row starting spot, while Van Minsel initially lined up outside of the fifth row. Both #1 drivers spent almost the entire feature around each other with Wheeler claiming second and Van Minsel third.
WOJCIK WINS FIFTH FEATURE IN A ROW
The Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stock feature came down to an all too familiar battle for the win; defending Track Champion Doug Wojcik and former three-time Track Champion Danny Hanson, racing for the win with hot shoes Cory Hanson and Shaun Mann thrown into the mix for excitement.
After winning the evening's second heat race, Cory Hanson was ready to continue his strong performance and started out by leading the initial trio of laps before Wojcik swept around for the lead. Danny Hanson, behind the wheel of a borrowed 42K for the night, moved into second on lap four, and from there on out it was Wojcik and Hanson dueling for the win.
Cory Hanson held off Mann for third.
CISEWSKI GRABS THIRD FEATURE WIN
Bob Cisewski claimed his third feature win of the 2013 season in the redbox+ 600 Modified division. Getting through the pack was probably the least of his worries - it was the distractions while under caution that seemed harder to deal with.
Several cautions bunched the pack up near the end of the feature - during each of those caution periods, current point leader Don Werner's #99 was lined up directly behind Cisewski's Ace Auto #40; Werner spent the cautions thumping and bumping the rear bar of Cisewski - we're sure, just to play a little psychological warfare with Cisewski. Unfortunately, the good natured bumper tag got a little too spirited when the two cars became hooked together just before the final restart.
After pulling the cars apart, Cisewski took the green flag and raced on to the win, with Werner second and defending Track Champion Greg Wohletz completing the top 3.
HAGER, HOFF & LaDUKE WIN OTHER FEATURES
Lee Hager raced his way to the front of the Elmer's Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stock feature to claim his first feature win ahead of point leader Bobby Fort, Jr. and Eric Duellman.
AJ Hoff won his second Sunshine Sanitation A-Mini Mod feature of the season on The Lightning Speedway while Matthew LaDuke won the B-Mini Mod feature.
