Mississippi Thunder Speedway and the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw 410 Sprints are making preperations for their final weekend of racing in 2024. For the IRA Sprints, they will make their first trip in 12 years to Fountain City, WI on Friday, September 27th.
In July of 2012, Bill Balog set the track record that still stands today with a 12.344 and turned that record setting qualifying lap into a feature win that evening. Promoter Tyrone Lingenfelter expects that time will be in jeopardy next weekend. "Back in 2012, the track was no where near as wide and banked as it is now. I would be shocked if the IRA Sprints don't shatter that record Friday night." Series Promoter Steve Sinclair is excited to get back to MTS and see all of the changes from the last trip in-person. "A lot has changed at Mississippi Thunder Speedway since our last visit 12 years ago and we are excited to see what kind of show we can put on. I have no doubt the racing will be good."
For Mississippi Thunder Speedway, September 27th and 28th are just the final piece of the puzzle to what has been a rewarding but out of the ordinary 2024 season. At the start of the year, MTS came out of the gates swinging for the fences with an action packed schedule and had some great turnouts. The World of Outlaw Late Model Dairyland Showdown set a new event attendance record at MTS in May and just one month later, XR Events "The Big Deal 24" set a new attendance record again. After the early part of June though, MTS would not race again until July 12th as scheduled off weeks and rainouts would put the track idle for almost five weeks. July and August is a very busy time for many families and that seemed to really show during the 2024 season as attendance numbers were sparatic compared to other seasons. The debut of the USRA North Star Nationals earlier this month was strong and Bob Timm thinks ending the 2024 season with something different would only be fitting for how the 2024 season has gone. "Everything about this year has been crazy. From working on the track in February, re-doing our hospitiality area, reshaping the track and new painted walls." Bob went on to say, "I can't even remember all of the other things that we changed but we have seen record high attendance crowds as well as record low attendance crowds. It has been a trying year wrapping our head around everything that is going on but I think we are continuing to grow and evolve. Hopefully we can take a lot of what we learned this year to give us a solid 2025 schedule for the fans and drivers."
