FOUNTAIN CITY (May 22) – A long night was ahead for those at Mississippi Thunder Speedway as make-up features were first on the card Friday, May 22nd to start the evening off. The previous week’s events got cut short by the heavy mist that blanketed the area eventually calling an early end to the show.
It was well worth the wait for Kyle Jumbeck, Corey Crapser, and Brad Waits as they all captured double-feature wins on Graphic Image night. Crapser’s wins were better yet after coming off a tear down at KRA Speedway the night before. Crapser’s motor was legal, and after a very long night, or short night of sleep, he proved he was still the man to beat in the WISSOTA Street Stocks.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds grabbed everyone’s attention right away with chaos in the first corner as a pileup set up a complete restart. Shaun Walski and Dalton Yohnk ran strong in the front but Jared Happel quickly jumped into second over Walski. Yohnk pedaled hard to hang onto the lead as Happel got side by side when a safety caution slowed the field with four laps down. Yohnk took the point on the restart followed by Chris Gilbertson and Happel, but Kyle Jumbeck got a good start and was into the lead in no time. Yohnk continued to fight off Happel, but fell back to third when Gilbertson closed in on him. Gilbertson then took over third ahead of Yohnk, and Walski settled into fifth place. Jumbeck put some distance on Happel when another caution caused the field to restart at just over halfway. Jumbeck, Happel, and Gilbertson set the pace on the restart and cruised to the finish. Jumbeck clocked feature win number four in as many nights. Happel finished a very s! trong second. Gilbertson, Yohnk, and Walski topped the rest of the field in third, fourth, and fifth.
Shawn Krousey and Kevin Hager led the WISSOTA Street Stocks for their make-up feature, but it was Corey Crapser who wailed past everyone early on to take the lead. Danny Hanson moved up from sixth place to challenge Crapser while Mike Conrad ran a strong third. Danny Richards and Darryl Foegen nipped the top five as they battled for fourth place. Crapser stretched to a big lead over Hanson as Conrad, Richards, and Foegen kept momentum behind in spots three though five. Fred Prudoehl and Dan Bork raced hard for sixth place as they tried to catch up to the lead group. Richards and Conrad mounted a great side-by-side battle and was the only real challenge of the race. In what seemed like a very long race due to early cautions, Crapser maintained his lead over Hanson when the final caution slowed the field when Conrad’s machine slowed with a flat tire. That set up a green-white-checkered dash to the finish. Crapser was able to fend off Hanson’s attempt at the win. Bork ! recovered from an earlier caution charged to him to finish third. Richards and Foegen filed in fourth and fifth.
Jeff Dregney and Tim Williamson sat on the front row for the WISSOTA Super Stock make-up feature. With just one lap complete however, a caution for cars getting turned around in turn four ended with Michael Hofer going off on the hook. Dregney assumed the lead followed by Troy Langowski and Jon Duffy. Duffy made the move to the lead when the second caution stopped the bunch when Phil Kendrick turned sideways and hit the front stretch wall head on. As Kendrick bounced off the wall, Scott Rollinger hit the binders and put his car into a slide and got into Kendrick. The two dropped from competition and the race resumed. Duffy, Dregney, and Bob Fort sat at the front on the restart as the race remained under green until the checkered flew. Langowski shot inside Dregney for third place down the back chute to move up behind Fort. Gary Wiersgalla gained momentum as he overtook Williamson for fifth place. Tommy Richards and Williamson battled for sixth place as Wiersgalla mo! ved into third over Langowski, but Langowski stole the spot back. Richards and Dregney raced side by side for fifth place when Dregney slipped to the infield and dropped back to eighth place. Duffy cleared the competition and won the main followed by Fort, Langowski, Richards, and Dan Nissalke.
USRA Modified action had Adam Stockhausen and John Doelle bring the field into the green flag. A complete restart was in order as cars were every which way in turn four on the first lap. Doelle charged to the lead but Brad Waits dove inside to make it short-lived. Stockhausen slipped into third place and was tailed by Josh Angst and Ron Britain. Another caution set Waits on the pole followed by Doelle and Angst as the cars all bounced through turn four. Ron Konkel had put the moves on and found his way into third place ahead of Angst while Stockhausen tried to catch back up. Kerry Ledebuhr used the high line to close in on Stockhausen to take fifth place. With only two laps to go, a caution for debris set the pack up with Waits, Doelle, Angst, and Ledebuhr ready to run. Waits pulled the win followed by Doelle, Angst, Ledebuhr, and Ben Mattick.
Next up were the regular show of heats followed by some much needed track work. Then the main events of the night took to the track. First up were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds going three wide after the green flag flew. Dalton Yohnk shot ahead of Erik Kanz but a restart was in order when Jack Baehman got together with Curt Luhmann. Luhmann’s car was left inoperable as the right side of the rearend was about a foot off the ground when the left side was rolling on the ground. As the tow truck assisted Luhmann to his pit, Yohnk took the point for the restart followed by Kyle Jumbeck and Kanz. Jumbeck got by Yohnk leaving Shawn Walski to purse second place. Ryan Olson quickly got up behind Walski for fourth place and hop-scotched through turn three into third place. Soon after, Olson overtook Yohnk for second place when Kanz’ machine slowed out of turn one. Jumbeck once again led the restart with Olson and Yohnk in hot pursuit. Walski closed in on Yohnk while Chris Gi! lbertson worked his way into the top five. Jumbeck pulled away to win his second feature of the night; fourth on the season. Olson ran a strong second. Coming in third was Gilbertson followed by Walski and Travis Krause.
WISSOTA Street Stocks barreled three wide down the front stretch as they began their second feature of the night. Andy Hoch, Dan Bork, Corey Crapser, and Donny Ganz all ran close for the lead. Mike Conrad and Danny Hanson joined Ganz to vie for fourth place when a caution stopped the pack when Shawn Krousey and Tyler Sass got together on the front stretch. Sass spun into the front stretch wall, and with absolutely nowhere to go, Lee Hager pummeled Sass’ machine at the flagstand. Crapser took the front row solo on the restart followed by Hanson and Bork. Hanson’s car had a bit of a push in turns three and four which allowed Bork up to run side by side with Hanson. Conrad ran in fifth place behind Hoch by this time. At the half way mark of the race, Crapser had extended his lead over Bork and Hanson while Conrad followed in fourth place. Danny Richards moved his ride into fifth place as the race wound down. Crapser made his return to Mississippi Thunder Speedway worth! the trip taking the second feature as well. Hanson sealed second place with Bork, Conrad, and Richards behind him.
Troy Langowski shot to the lead from his third place start in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature event followed by Jon Duffy. A complete restart was in order however when Tommy Richards nipped Duffy sending him around. On the restart, Jeff Dregney and Kevin Hager set the pace followed by Langowski and Dan Nissalke. With two laps down, Langowski took the lead followed by Hager and Richards as Dregney drifted backwards. Bob Fort was hot on the trail of Hager and Duffy and soon zipped into third place. A battle for sixth place ensued between Gary Wiersgalla and Tim Williamson which helped the top five pull away. With more cautions throughout the race, Langowski more than earned his feature win. Richards notched a second place finish in his rookie year in the WISSOTA Super Stock division. Duffy, Fort, and Nissalke completed the top five spots.
Ben Mattick and Josh Angst led the 21-car USRA Modified field to the green flag, but a complete restart was to be had when a car spun on the first lap. With another start in the books, three-wide down the front stretch, and dust flying, Bob Timm jumped to the lead, but Josh Mattick went for a 360°. Mattick kept going but several cars stacked up behind him. Timm again took the lead, but Brad Waits was not far behind and soon took over first place. Angst dipped into third place followed by John Doelle, Kerry Ledebuhr, and Jay Ihrke when Angst spun in turn four which brought out yet another yellow flag. This time Waits took the front spot and was followed ever so closely by Timm and Doelle. Ihrke soon found himself wagering a bet with Ledebuhr for fourth place. Timm did his best to catch Waits but could not make it happen. Waits held off the onslaught of cars behind him and headed to victory lane with the win. Timm, Doelle, Ihrke, and Josh Mattick rounded out the top f! ive.
Mike Krause led the Hornet feature early on, but Johny Severtson quickly shot low in turn three to take it away. Ryan Happel moved up to third place when a multi-car spin in turn two settled the bunch down. Fletcher Milene’s car flipped in turn one, but Milene exited his car and was not hurt. Severtson assumed the lead followed by Krause and Happel as they moved away from Rick Slawson and Kevin Laufenberg. Happel jetted into second place and tried to mount a challenge with Severtson, but Severtson collected the win ahead of Happel. Krause, Slawson, and Laufenberg finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
Mike Stevens grabbed the early lead in the A Mini Mods as Charlie McNally chased him down. Alex Williamson caught up to the leaders and cruised into third place. Stevens fought off the tough challenges of McNally but slipped off the track which granted McNally the lead. Jake Timm then moved into second place followed by Williamson and Brandon Reutzel. Jerome Kellner and Gary Kellner raced in fifth and sixth places. McNally never looked back and took the win followed by Timm. Williamson, Reutzel, and Jerome Kellner sealed the top five.
B Mini Mod feature action saw Mathew Schliesman and Alex Stevens out front followed by Dylan Buckland. Schliesman was fast in first as Stevens ran him down. Tanner Brown raced hard into fourth place as he tried to chase down the top three. Schliesman kept a handle on the lead for much of the race, but when the time was right, Stevens stole it away and led the most important lap of all; the last one. Stevens topped Schliesman, Brown, Rachel LaDuke, and Nicholas Wagner for the win.
Don Werner jumped to the early lead over Jeff Matejka and Charlie McNally in the 600 Mini Mods. Matejka flew down the back stretch as he chased Werner down. Werner got a bit wide in turn four which allowed Matejka to take the lead. From there, Matejka checked out on Werner and McNally. Matejka won with McNally finishing second. Werner has issues with his car and dropped off the track mid-race.
