FOUNTAIN CITY (June 19) – Clean sweeps and rolls added to the nights' excitement before it ended complete; and with no rain at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wisconsin as make-up features to complete the previous week’s rainout were run in addition to the full regular show. Winona Radio Driver of the Week was WISSOTA Street Stock driver Fred Prudoehl of Winona.
Make-up feature number one on the night was the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Chris Gilbertson shot ahead of Tyler Creeley at the drop of the green flag, and Travis Krause raced side by side with Creeley for second place. Dalton Yohnk quickly charged to third place over Creeley as Pete Bushman and Dustin Scott wheeled into a fifth for fifth. Krause’s ride slowed to a crawl after a puff of smoke was seen and the only caution of the race realigned the field. As Krause went pitside, Gilbertson was challenged by Yohnk, and Bushman and Scott raced side by side for third place. Kyle Jumbeck made a fast climb into fourth place which dropped Bushman to fifth. Yohnk took the lead over Gilbertson as Scott closed in on the second spot. The top four spots of Yohnk, Gilbertson, Scott, and Jumbeck had their own race going a distance ahead of the rest of the field as Creeley took fifth place from Bushman. Jumbeck dove low under Scott and eventually took second place from Gilbertson. Yohnk kept a steady grip on the lead followed by Jumbeck and Gilbertson. Jumbeck finally made the pass on Yohnk and never looked back. For his sixth win on the season, Jumbeck lead Yohnk, Gilbertson, Scott, and Creeley across the finish line.
The Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks grabbed a fast pace from the start of their make-up feature as Kevin Hager and Rick Lisowski led the bunch to the green. Hager took the lead over Lisowski as Dan Bork moved into a side by side race with Lisowski before jumping on Hager’s bumper early on. Danny Hanson made some quick moves and jumped into third place in no time. Fred Prudoehl zipped up to the inside of Bork as a three-way chase for second between Bork, Hanson, and Prudoehl entertained the crowd. Hanson charged out of the group into second place as his hunt for Hager began. Hanson looked to the low side on lap four and made the pass on Hager for the lead. Hanson, Hager, Bork, and Prudoehl were running a very close top four as Donny Ganz closed in on Prudoehl. Hager made Bork work hard but did not give up second place. After several sniffs on Hager’s bumper, Bork made the pass into second place while Hanson had laid some ground between himself and the rest of the field. The lead cars encountered lap traffic, and as they did so, Danny Richards moved into sixth place after starting dead last due to mechanical failures in his heat the week before. Andy Hoch climbed into fifth place ahead of Richards and Ganz when a caution slowed the field setting up a dash to the finish. Bork shot inside of Hanson on the restart, but Hanson was able to pull out in the lead ahead of Bork and Hager. Hanson headed to victory lane, and Bork, Hager, Ganz, and Hoch headed to the scales in the top five.
Dennis Earney and Tim Williamson set the pace in the WISSOTA Super Stock make-up feature, but it was Gary Wiersgalla who shot to a fast lead. Bob Fort barreled through three-wide competition into third place behind Williamson. Fort then darted under Williamson and took second spot away enroute to Wiersgalla up ahead. Earney and Troy Langowski battled side by side, and by lap six, Langowski had moved into third place behind Fort. As the cars spread out, Wiersgalla, Fort, and Langowski raced hard up front. A caution flew when Fort’s machine slowed due to a flat tire. The restart set Wiersgalla on the point followed by Langowski, Earney, Williamson, and Kevin Hager. Wiersgalla and Langowski ran close for the lead ahead of Williamson when Hager got inside Earney for fourth place. Jon Duffy then tried to work into a challenge for the spot as well. Duffy raced Earney for fifth place as Hager fought off the two to hang on to fourth. Wiersgalla got a bit slideways out of turn two which allowed Langowski to take the lead briefly. Wiersgalla grabbed it back and took the win ahead of Langowski, Williamson, Earney, and Hager.
Make-up feature number four on the night was the USRA Modifieds as John Doelle and Andy Bohnstengel headed to the green flag ahead of Paul Hamernik and Roger Niederkorn. Doelle shot to the lead and left Bohnstengel to contend with Hank Rollinger Jr. Josh Angst and Adam Stockhausen joined Hamernik as they raced three-wide for fourth place. Angst galloped out of the bunch and right into second place over Rollinger. Bohnstengel dropped off the pace which allowed Stockhausen fourth place on his own. Doelle set himself up a straightaway lead over the field as Angst found a relatively smooth path in second place. Rollinger kept his distance ahead of Stockhausen when Bob Timm took a shine to fifth place alongside of Hamernik. Doelle managed to hold the rest prisoners and took the feature win. Rollinger stole second place from Angst, and Stockhausen finished fourth ahead of Timm.
Hornet make-up feature action saw Johny Severtson move from his eighth place starting spot to win the feature. Brock Adamson of Holmen finished second ahead of Mike Krause, Rick Slawson, and Kevin Laufenberg.
With all make-up features in the books and after some track work, next up was the main show of the night with heat action beginning approximately 8:30 p.m. Clean sweeps were on the horizon for a few drivers while others had trouble keeping their cars upright.
WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature action saw Josh Crary take the early lead from the pole, but Erik Kanz moved up to battle Crary for the spot. As Crary and Kanz occupied themselves, Dalton Yohnk moved inside to take the lead. Jared Happel slipped into third place over Crary then while Dustin Scott shot into fourth. Kyle Jumbeck made a great advance into the top spots as he shot down the back stretch, but he just as quickly dropped to the infield with transmission issues. Yohnk expanded his lead but looped it on his own which handed the lead back to Kanz. Happel then took the lead from Kanz as Scott moved into contention for second with Happel. So with Happel in the lead followed by Scott and Kanz, Crary settled into fourth place followed by the charging Ben Anderson. With eight laps to go, Tyler Creeley spun in turn four which pulled the caution. Luckily chaos was averted, and the cars set up for a restart. Happel led the field while Scott and Kanz tried to make it three-wide for the lead. Scott took over first followed by Happel and Kanz. A spinning Anderson drew another caution, and with six laps to go, Scott, Happel, Kanz, and Chris Creeley set up to make a dash to the finish. Scott maintained his lead followed by Happel as Creeley, Pete Bushman, and Kanz engaged in a three-wide battle down the front stretch for third place. Scott tallied his very first feature win and was followed by Happel in a very strong second place finish. Anderson regrouped to finish third followed by Creeley and Kanz.
Shaun Mann and Kevin Hager revved up the action as the two charged down the front stretch for the WISSOTA Street Stock feature event. As Hager took the lead, Andy Hoch quickly shot into second place, but Hoch was joined three wide down the stretch by Mann and Danny Richards. Hager managed to hold off Richards as Danny Hanson jumped into third place over Hoch. Dan Bork and Fred Prudoehl ran side by side for fifth place in the fast-paced main event. Richards began his rundown of Hager as Hanson gained ground on the two. Richards gained momentum to run side by side with Hager down the stretch and a three-way battle ensued for the lead between Hager, Richards, and Hanson. Lap traffic began to snarl their efforts, but Hager was able to maintain the lead over Hanson for a bit. Hanson managed to make the move into first place over Hager and Richards while a half track back, Hoch held off Bork and Donny Ganz for fourth place. As five cars raced for spots four through eight, Richards and Hager chased close for second place. Hanson gave himself a comfortable lead and was able to win his second feature on the night in convincing fashion. Hager finished a strong second ahead of a very close Richards in third. And with a bit of patience, Bork, Hoch, and Ganz crossed the finish line in spots three through five.
Dan Nissalke and Bob Fort set the pace in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Fort quickly took the lead over Nissalke while Jon Duffy, Troy Langowski and Gary Wiersgalla battled it out for third place. Langowski took the high line around Fort and Nissalke into the lead at the flagstand as Nissalke tried to take the lead back. Fort dove under Nissalke in turn four to once again take the lead back. Duffy and Wiersgalla raced for fourth place when Langowski caught some holes in turn four. Langowski avoided a catastrophe and was able to keep his pony pointed in the right direction behind Fort. As the cars settled into their own space, Nissalke dropped to the infield with a flat; that moved Dennis Earney into the top five. Langowski looked hard for the lead, but Fort put a stop to that and cruised to the finish line ahead of Langowski and Wiersgalla. Earney and Duffy rounded out the top five.
John Doelle and Ron Britain started on the front row of the USRA Modified feature and were quickly challenged by Kerry Ledebuhr and the young guns of Lance Hofer and Josh Angst. But Angst quickly dropped off the pace with a flat tire. A caution slowed the field, and the restart had Doelle, Britain, Kerry Ledebuhr, and Bob Timm lead off. Timm shot low in a three-wide charge with Britain and Ledebuhr in turn two for second place. Hofer settled into fifth place as Adam Stockhausen tried to work his way into the top five. A red flag stopped the pack when Andy Bohnstengel and Roger Niederkorn made contact on the back stretch. The contact sent Bohnstengel head-first into the wall and into a hard flip. Bohnstengel was reported to be uninjured as he took his unfortunate slow ride back to the pits. With 16 laps to go, Doelle stayed in the lead as Timm tried to work the low groove in second place while being closely followed by Angst and Ledebuhr. Angst had recovered quite well from his prior flat tire and looked at stealing second place from Timm. As more cautions materialized, laps were cut from the race. Timm was able to cut inside Doelle for the lead. Doelle’s car got sideways and was packed hard by Ledebuhr which pulled caution seven. Timm restarted in the lead followed by Angst, Ledebuhr, Hank Rollinger, and Adam Stockhausen. The final caution came about when Rollinger caught a hole out of turn two which sent him across the track and Stockhausen was in the wrong place and got caught up with Rollinger. Rollinger headed to the pits with damage and the race resumed. As Timm rounded turn three heading into the checkered flag, his car broke loose and sent him rear to the wall. After making contact with the wall, Timm’s machine did a quick flip and landed upright with one simple flip. A red flag stopped the field although the race was called complete at that time. Timm drove his car off the track but was scored a DNF; but still finished in fifth place. Angst was in the right place and scored the win followed by Doelle, Ledebuhr, and Stockhausen.
Johny Severtson made a clean sweep on the night and won the Hornet feature again; twice in one night. Mike Krause finished a strong second followed by Brock Adamson, Jeremy Johnson, and Michael Thompson.
Next up is Mid-Season Championship night Friday, June 26th. The following week the speedway will host its first Late Model WISSOTA DART Challenge Series event on Thursday, July 2nd with support classes consisting of WISSOTA Street Stocks for a $300 paycheck and WISSOTA Super Stocks running for a $500 purse. Friday, July 3rd will be a regular night of racing. Thursday and Friday, July 2nd and 3rd will also be the Redbox Midwest Mini Mod Summer Nationals. Racing begins at the regular time of 7 p.m. on both nights with Minis starting at 6 p.m.
