HARE AND HANSON OPEN 2010 WITH CLEAN SWEEPS AT MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY

April 16, 2010

By Tracy Hager
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (April 16, 2010) – The doors are open! Welcome to the 2010 season at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY in Fountain City, Wisconsin. Added clay, more cement grandstands, better exit stairs from the booths, and more lights have enhanced the speedway for the 2010 racing season. River City Manufacturing USRA Mods, Winona Auto Sales WISSOTA Super Stocks, The Engine Store.com USRA B Mods, Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks, and the Oakridge Fabrication 600 Mods returned as regular classes for the Graphic Image Season Opener.

New to the track this year are the USRA B-Mods and the WISSOTA Late Models. While the USRA B-Mods will be a regular attraction, the WISSOTA Late Models will be on a limited run on the schedule. However, there will be enough nights on the schedule to crown the first WISSOTA Late Model track champion at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY.

Reigning track champion Danny Hanson started his season off in style winning both his heat and feature in the Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks division. In the class' debut as well as the driver's debut at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, Brandon Hare from Elma, Iowa topped the field of The Engine Store.com USRA B Mods. Local veteran and last year's track champion, Gary Wiersgalla, started off his season in excellent form grabbing the feature in the Winona Auto Sales WISSOTA Super Stocks. Josh Angst grabbed a big birthday present for himself as he topped the field of Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modifieds.

Angst puts stronghold on the field

Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified feature action saw Lance Hofer pace the field of 14. Andy Bohnstengel and Rookie Chris Gilbertson raced for second place, but Jay Ihrke quickly swooped into third ahead of Gilbertson.

Adam Stockhausen and Josh Angst ran side by side for fifth place while Ihrke tried to slip under Hofer for the lead. Ihrke slipped to a stop barely off the track as a caution waved over the field. Ihrke was charged for the caution and rejoined at the rear of the field.

Angst was on a tear as he galloped his way into the lead ahead of Hofer and Bob Timm who had moved up to second.

Gilbertson remained steady in the top five as Angst jumped to a considerable led over Timm. Gilbertson held off the hard charges of Ihrke who had worked his way back into the top five. Gilbertson and Ihrke kept up a great battle for third as they approached lap traffic. Gilbertson and Ihrke split to pass lapped traffic as they raced for third.

Angst continued his stronghold on the field and headed to victory lane for the season opener. Timm cinched second followed by Ihrke, Hofer, and Gilbertson.

Wiersgalla holds off Brauer for feature win

Michael Hofer started on the pole for the Winona Auto Sales WISSOTA Super Stock main event inside Gary Wiersgalla. A complete restart was in order when Brett Dulas spun in turn two. Wiersgalla shot to the lead followed by Bob Fort. Jeff Brauer and Dennis Earney waged a side by side battle for third followed by Kevin Glander in fifth. Wiersgalla set up a strong lead over Fort as Brauer closed in on Fort. Another caution closed the gap Wiersgalla had set up and then had Fort and Brauer right on his tail. Earney and Hofer then raced side by side for fourth, but it was Earney to settle in the spot. As the track became slicker, Wiersgalla continued his lead when the fourth caution realigned the field for a five-lap shootout. Wiersgalla managed to hold Brauer back and take the first feature win of the season. Brauer, Fort, Hofer, and Earney finished up the top five.

Hare collects first win at track

Ben Moudry from Protivin, Iowa dashed to the lead over Mike Kelly in the The Engine Store.com USRA B Mod feature, but a caution restarted the field. The next time it was Kelly to break out of the chute for the lead, but once again, a caution emerged for a multi-car pileup in turn one. Whether from overflow fuel, oil on the manifold, or a combination, a couple bursts of flames from a couple cars were put out as the cars were cleaned up and racing resumed. Kelly assumed the lead but with 16 laps left, he spun going into turn four which collected a host of cars. Kelly was charged with his spin which handed the lead to Moudry. Rookie Parker Hale fell into second place followed by Brandon Hare and Ben Anderson. Hare flew to the high side to challenge Moudry for the lead, but Moudry hung on. Hare again charged for first as Anderson slipped in front of Hale for third. With nine laps to go, Hare finally made the pass and made it stick and cruised on to his first win at the track. Moudry finished second, Anderson finished third, and Hale grabbed a fabulous fourth place followed by Jake Timm to round out the top five.

Hanson Starts 2010 off in style

Dan Bork shot to the lead over Shaun Mann in the Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks feature. Danny Hanson dropped in behind Bork quickly while Danny Richards, Mann, and Donny Ganz raced for third place. Hanson made an effort to take over first from Bork as Richards shot into third place. Hanson finally made the pass on Bork and put some ground between the two. Rick Lisowski battled three wide for fourth place with Mann and Ganz when a caution reset the field. Hanson again maintained his lead when a caution slowed the cars again. Ganz went to the tail for the spin of Mann, and the cars were off racing again. Bork continued his pursuit of the lead while Richards followed. Lisowski and Mann raced close for fourth when Lisowski spun in turn one. Mann was charged for the caution and the race resumed. With 12 laps to go, it appeared that the race was going in reverse, but as the drivers finally strung laps together, Hanson was able to lay some ground between himself and second place. Richards finally cleared Bork for second, and Lisowski followed in third sending Bork back to fourth. Richards had to settle for second as Hanson capped the night with the win and the clean sweep. Lisowski had a great showing with a third place finish followed by Bork and Fred Prudoehl.

Matejka continues domination of Oakridge Fabrication 600 Mods

Jeff Matejka lead from flag to flag in the Oakridge Fabrication 600 Mods. Dave Freuechte finished second followed by Charlie McNally, Joe Jasnoch, and Don Werner.
