FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (May 6, 2011) – Night two at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY seemed relatively calmer than the opener, but the racing action was definitely stepped up. Multi-line racing and three and four-wide action covered many classes. WISSOTA Street Stock driver Danny Hanson tallied a clean sweep as did Josh Angst in the USRA Modifieds.
Jeff Brauer recovered from a less-than-ideal opener to win the WISSOTA Super Stock main event while Troy Hovey made the pass to steal the win from Ben Anderson in the USRA B-Mod feature.
Keith Foss carried the American Flag for the National Anthem for honors as last week's Driver of the Week. Unfortunately he was not able to carry over his good runs to this week as he had issues in both his heat and feature races.
HANSON GRABS REPEAT STREET-STOCK FEATURE!
Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stock feature action started off in full force with three-wide racing from Matt Wolfe, Tyler Wahlstrom, and Danny Richards. At the cross of lap two, two rows of three-wide racing cluttered up the front stretch. Richards and Wahlstrom ran even for the lead as Danny Hanson shot to third. Soon another three-way fight ensued for the lead. Richard Weir moved into fourth place followed by Shaun Mann and Wolfe as the top eight cars were close and competitive. Lap after lap, no one could really break away as Wahlstrom lead by a fender over Richards. With five laps down, Hanson made the move under Wahlstrom and Richards for the lead but the first caution slowed the field. On the restart, more three-wide racing followed. Hanson was able to pull to the lead while Mann tip-toed into second place ahead of Richards. Ryan Henderson and Wahlstrom battled for fourth place as Hanson settled into a comfortable lead. Henderson gained some steam to pull ahead of Wahlstrom, but Wahlstrom continued to race for the spot. Hanson cruised to his second feature in a row followed by another strong run by Mann. Wahlstrom notched a great third place finish followed by Henderson and Fred Prudoehl.
LAST-LAP PASS FOR HOVEY TO GRAB USRA B-MOD FEATURE!
It was redemption time for the EngineStore.com USRA B-Mods as they regrouped after last week's chaotic feature to running a two-caution feature with a lot of movement. Ben Anderson shot to a big lead over Brian Mahlstedt, but Troy Langowski slid into second quickly. Brandon Hare geared up and moved from sixth to third and was followed by a pack of five cars for fourth place. Nick Frion, Troy Hovey, Erik Kanz, Chad Kosidowski, and Alex Williamson all vied for fourth early on. Hovey came out on top of the pack in fourth followed by Kanz and Frion. Anderson continued his solid lead, but Langowski gained somewhat as Hare moved in too. Kanz made a run on Hovey for third as the two raced side by side. A caution with nine laps down to reset the field with Anderson on the point followed by Hare, Langowski, Hovey, and Kanz. Hare grabbed second and left Langowski to fend off Hovey and Kanz for third place. A second caution set the field up for the final eight-lap sprint. Anderson, Hare, Hovey, and Kanz set the pace as Langowski held Mahlstedt to sixth. Hovey shot under Hare for second enroute to Anderson's lead. Lap traffic came into play as the laps wound down. At the white flag lap, Hovey capitalized on that lap traffic and zipped into the lead over Anderson. Hovey headed to victory lane on night two for the win. Anderson had to settle for runner up followed by Hare, Kanz, and Mahlstedt.
BRAUER REBOUNDS FOR SUPER-STOCK FEATURE WIN!
Jay Oricchio and Jon Duffy set the pace for the Winona Auto Sales WISSOTA Super Stock main, but Duffy spun on the first lap which sent him to the tail of the field for the restart. Oricchio pulled off the track with issues which handed the front row to Gary Wiersgalla and Jeff Brauer. Wiersgalla and Brauer ran for the lead followed by Bob Fort. Kelly Anderson tailed Fort in fourth while Dennis Earney moved to fifth. Caution two waved when Tommy Richards spun in turn four. A restart turned into another restart when Fort sent Wiersgalla around in turn four just before the green waved. Wiersgalla assumed his point spot followed by Brauer, Anderson, Earney, and Kevin Hager. Brauer slid under Wiersgalla for the lead, but Anderson closed in. Brauer, Anderson, Wiersgalla, and Earney led the field while Hager fought off Fort's resurgence for fifth place. Fort gained the spot back and then moved on to Wiersgalla's fourth place spot behind Earney. Hager then was able to shoot under Wiersgalla to crack the top five again. At the half-way mark of the race, Brauer, Anderson, and Earney had put a little distance on the field. Hager continued to work on Fort for fourth place as Wiersgalla and Josh Rodewald followed in sixth and seventh. Earney made a move on Anderson for second at lap 14. Brauer managed to lock in the win which sent the 2010 Track Champion to victory lane. Earney, Anderson, Fort, and Hager rounded out the top five.
ANGST HOLDS OFF CHALLENGERS TO WIN FIRST MODIFIED FEATURE!
The River City Manufacturing USRA Modified saw a lot of action as Ben Mattick and Ron Konkel led the field in to the green flag. Bob Timm, John Doelle, and Ryan York raced for third, but Timm quickly raced side by side with Mattick for the lead ahead of Josh Angst. Konkel, Luke Schott, and Doelle raced for fourth place. Schott worked the low groove to take over fourth when a caution waved over the field. Angst then led with Timm chasing in second. Mattick ran in third a short distance behind Timm while Konkel fought off the charges of rookie Jake Timm, Doelle, and Schott. Angst quickly commanded the lead followed by Bob Timm, Mattick,Konkel, and Jake Timm. With 11 laps down, a restart set Angst out front of the pack. Bob Timm, Jake Timm, and Mattick all clustered in turn two for second place. Jake Timm came out the leader of that pack into second place, but continued to be chased by his dad. Angst sealed his first win of the season followed by an impressive run by Jake Timm in second. Bob Timm, York, and Mattick finished out the top five.
