USRA North Star Nationals Championship Night
BAXTER BREAKS INTO VICTORY LANE DURING COCA-COLA DRIVER APPRECIATION NIGHT AT MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY!

May 27, 2022

By Dan Bailey
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (Friday May 27, 2022) – David Baxter finally made a trip to the Whitewater CDJR Victory Lane at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY! Coca-Cola Driver Appreciation Night ended up being the regular season opener for 2022, and Baxter was happy to start his 2022 season off with a "W", "I've be a regular here for a few years," said Baxter in Victory Lane after winning the Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified feature, "so, you can't imagine how happy I am to finally get this win!"

Joe Chisholm raced his #25 to his first Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod feature win @ MTS, while former Track Champions Brad Waits and Chris Hovden made return trips to Victory Lane via wins in the Buffalo Saloon USRA Late Model Division presented by Centerville Welding & Repair and Horman's HVAC USRA Hobby Stock features, respectively.

BAXTER BLASTS TO FIRST FEATURE WIN

Eau Claire, WI's David Baxter has been a regular at at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY for quite a while; but, despite those regular Friday night trips to "The Big 1/3-Mile" he's had to make those return trips home without a feature win celebration. That all changed during Coca-Cola's Driver Appreciation Night on Friday, May 27th, as Baxter BLAZED his way to the front of the field via his steady fast laps, and used BLISTERING restarts to fend off any challengers on his way to his first ever Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified feature win at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY!

While the evening's 25-Lap Coca-Cola Feature was interupted by several cautions, Baxter seemed not to be bothered as his flawless restarts rutinely opened up sizable leads over the competition.

"We did have a great heat race," said Baxter in Victory Lane, "But I felt like we still had more. A few adjustments between the heat and the feature gave me the speed I new I could get."

Baxter pushed the extreme high-line through the 25-lap feature to fend off challengers and snag the win, "I could run low of middle if I needed, [but] the top was perfect tonight. I almost made a huge mistake there with a lap or two to go - almost took down the wall there in [turns] one and two, but, luckily saved that."

Pole Sitter JT Wasmund looked primed for a feature win early, leading a couple laps early, before dropping several position - only to remount a late race charge for a satisfying second place finish.

Michael Truscott, Jim Chisholm, Jake Smith, Keith Foss, and a host of others, battled mightely near the front of the field as position swapping throughout the 26-car field was regular occurance. As the checkered flag waived for Baxter, Truscott, Chisholm and Smith completed the top-5 behind Baxter and Wasmund.

WAITS WOWS 'EM WITH LATE MODEL WIN

Rochester, MN's Brad Waits knows how to win features. Coming into Friday's Coca-Cola season opener, he was sixth in the 'All Time Feature Winners' list at "The Big 1/3-Mile" with 31. After Friday's Buffalo Saloon USRA Late Model feature, he improved his feature win number by yet one more, tying Danny Hanson at fifth in the list with, now, 32 feature wins!

He'll be the first to admit, though, that this 32 feature win was a bit of a gift. "He had a fast rocket ship", Waits said, of Lance Hofer and his #11. Hofer led the 20-lap feature all the way up to lap 19 . . . but, then slowed abruptly coming through turns one and two after taking the white flag. With Hofer out, Waits inherited the lead for the shoot-out to the finish, a run to the win that was topped only by his fun comments in Victory Lane!

Pole Sitter Triton Krause put forth a stellar effort behind the wheel of his white #34, battling in the lead pack the entire feature to bring home a second place finish.

Kory Ressie ran strong the entire feature to hold on for third.

JOE CHISHOLM ADDS HIS NAME TO LIST OF FEATURE WINNERS

Fans at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY have gotten used to a Chisholm in Victory Lane; but, up until Friday, it was two-time national Champion, and defending MTS B-Mod Track Champion JIM Chisholm! Now there's another. Joe Chisholm showed that his nickname of "Smoke" will hold up under pressure as he battled fiercely to hold on for his first career feature win at MTS!

Chisholm kept his #25 in the mix of a steady 6-car battle at the front of the field to grab that first feature win just ahead of Shaun Walsi in second and Taylor Skauge in third, with former Track Champion Ryan Olson and Pole-Sitter Zach Brom completing the top-5.

HOVDEN HOBBY STOCK WINNER AGAIN

2020 Track Champion Chris Hovden returned to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, after a year of USRA Stock Car racing, and immediately made his way back into Victory Lane!

Hovden was able to keep speedsters Joshua Ludeking and Steve Dwyer behind him just long enough to grab the HORMAN's HVAC USRA Hobby Stock feature win!
