MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY 2012 SEASON OPENER BEATS THREATENING WEATHER!

April 27, 2012

By Dan Bailey, USMTS.com & USRARacing.com
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (June 03, 2011) – With threatening weather on the way, MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY staff and officials knuckled down and focused on presenting a quick and exciting 2012 season opening event. Race fans who ignored cloudy skies, high winds, approaching rain and cool temperatures were treated to an exciting night of Dirt-track action presented by Fastenal.

With Carl Edward's 2012 Roush-Fenway Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup #99 Fastenal Ford Fusion on display in the hospitality area, racing fans filled into the grandstands and prepared for the a mixture of local racers and traveling hot shoes as the track regular Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks, Oakridge Fabrication 600 Mods, and all new M.T.S. Pure Stocks played support to the $4,000-to-win USMTS National Championship Series and the Industrial Material Surplus Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA B-Mods.

The spotlight of the evening was firmly shinning on the USMTS National Championship Series; after six heat races and three 'B-Mains' the competition came to full speed with the evening's $4000 to win 40-lap Swan Energy "A" Main.

SPRINGFIELD, MO'S TERRY PHILLIPS CLAIMS $4000 WIN

(from USMTS.com) Terry Phillips took the lead from Rodney Sanders with 10 laps complete, and then held on over the final 30 circuits to score the victory Friday night as the USMTS National Championship Series paid a visit to the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY in Fountain City, Wis.

In the main event presented by Fastenal, polesitter and track owner Bob Timm took the lead from the outside of the front row and led the first lap, but mechanical woes sidelined the veteran before he could complete a second lap.

Rodney Sanders, who has eleven top-10 finishes in eleven points races this season, inherited the point and paced the next nine laps before Phillips powered his way into the lead and took command.

Phillips was flawless the rest of the way, and he had to be as Sanders shadowed him the whole way but came up about a car-length short at the finish line.

It was Phillips' series-best fifth overall USMTS victory of the season, but his first in the USMTS National Championship Series which carries a $30,000 check for the series points champion.

Friday's win was worth $4,000 to the second-generation ace from Springfield, Mo.

King of America Modified Nationals winner and runaway Rookie of the Year points leader Stormy Scott came from the eighth starting spot to finish third while points leader and defending USMTS National Champion Ryan Gustin finished fourth by holding off nine-time titleist Kelly Shryock.

Jon Tesch, Mike Sorensen, Chase Junghans, Bryan Rowland and Jason Cummins rounded out the top-10.

DROSTE ROLLS TO FIRST INDUSTRIAL MATERIAL SURPLUS IRON MAN CHALLENGE VICTORY

(from USRARacing.com) Tyler Droste took the lead at the drop of the green flag, and then led all 20 laps of the main event Friday night at the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY to notch his first victory in the Industrial Material Surplus Iron Man Challenge for USRA B-Mods.

The 16-year-old from Waterloo, Iowa, started from the outside of the front row and wrestled the lead away from polesitter Josh Gesell on the first lap.

He was challenged the rest of the way by Erik Kanz, but held on to pocket the $500 top prize.

Kanz, along with three other Minnesota drivers - Dan Wheeler, Parker Hale and Shaun Walski - rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Brian Mahlstedt, Troy Langowski, Ben Moudry, Jason Schlangen and Alex Williamson.

CORY HANSON STARTS 2012 WITH FIRST EVER FEATURE WIN

Cory Hanson has spent several years trying to wrangle in his elusive first feature victory; that multi-year hunt finally came to a close at the 2012 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY season opener as the Black River Falls, WI racer held off defending track champion Danny Hanson (no relation) for the Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stock feature victory.

"That was awesome!" shouted Hanson while celebrating in victory lane after the feature win, "This car was almost perfect out there. I could run it where I wanted and was able to stay out front."

The Street Stock feature got off to a wild start with an early-race pile-up in turns three and four that ended up collecting no fewer than six cars, including pole-sitter Fred "Fast Freddie" Prudoehl and outside front row starter Ryan Henderson. Front end damage acquired in the miss-hap hampered Prudoehl's plans for early season success and forced Henderson to pull his car off the track and into the work area for attention from his pit crew, meaning that Henderson had to restart from the rear of the field and spent the rest of the feature trying to battle through the heavy traffic to secure a mid-pack finish.

Meanwhile, it became an all-Hanson battle at the front of the field. Cory Hanson quickly moved his Vision Airlines #79 to the front, while 2010 WISSOTA National Champion Danny Hanson worked his way into second and quickly lined his #5 up right behind the leader. The ran the last two-thirds of the feature nose to tail with Danny Hanson trying to find way to get up along side Cory Hanson and at least throw a legitimate challenge for the lead.

Cory Hanson was not at all in the mood to simply step aside and put forth a near perfect run that kept himself out front in order to claim the feature win. Shaun Mann, Doug Wojcik and Nick Schwebach rounded out the top-5.

Earlier in the evening, Danny Hanson had surprised many when he made it official on the pre-race "Live Trackside" radio program on Winona Radio's KG-Kountry 13-80 AM and KW Country 99.3 FM that not only was he NOT going to be making another run at the WISSOTA National Championship, he wasn't even going to running the entire season locally. As a matter of fact, he already had an scheduled meeting with an un-named individual who was coming down to his race shop the very next day and was most likely going to purchase Hanson's #5; leaving him with nothing to drive after the opening night event.

LUHMANN STRETCHES LEAD ON WAY TO 600 MOD WIN

Second heat-race winner Don Werner jumped from the inside of the second row, at the start of the evening's feature, to lead the first half of the OakRidge Fabrication 600 Mod Feature. Werner built up a large lead while Curt Luhmann worked his way through the pack to battle outside pole-sitter Greg Wohletz for second.

Luhmann eventually passed Wohletz to move into second and then immediately reeled in Werner to challenge for the lead. After a move in turns three and four that allowed Luhmann to wrestle the top spot from Werner, he immediately began pulling away and built up an almost entire straightaway lead with his black and orange #8 on way to the feature win.

Werner settled for second, followed by Joe Provinzino in second, Wohletz in third and Bill Bauers completing the top-5.

VOGT VICTORIOUS IN M.T.S. PURE STOCK DEBUT

Brandon Vogt topped a two-car battle for the win in the first ever M.T.S. Pure Stock feature. The new division is designed as an affordable entry level, full bodied division which harkens back to the grass roots style of dirt-track "Stock" car racing.

MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY's 2012 season will continue next Friday night May 4th with the first 'Regular Season" program on the high-banked 1/3-Mile Oval. On-Track action will get underway at 7 PM and be comprised of River city Manufacturing USRA Modifieds, Winona Auto Sales WISSOTA Super Stocks, The Engine Store USRA B-Mods, Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks, Oak Ridge Fabrication 600 Mods, and M.T.S. Pure Stocks.

Adult General Admission is $12 with Senior Citizen tickets only $10 while all children 12 and under will be admitted ABSOLUTELY FREE! For more details, visit the official MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY web site: www.MississippiThunder.com.
