ISENBERG COLLECTS FIRST CORN BELT CLASH LATE MODEL SERIES VICTORY DURING KG - BUD NIGHT AT MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY

June 1, 2012

By Dan Bailey & CornBeltClash.com
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (June 1, 2012) – Tim Isenberg's bridesmaid status with the Corn Belt Clash Late Model Series is now over. The Marshfield, Wisconsin driver who had nine runner-up place finishes last season, broke through into CBC victory lane during KG-Bud Night at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY in Fountain City, Wisconsin as he led a bulk of the event and held off a hard charging Jimmy Mars in the process to capture the $3,000 pay day and bring home his first career Corn Belt Clash Series win.
Nick Herrick and Isenberg made-up the front row of Friday night's 35-lap A-Main and battled side-by-side over the opening laps before Isenberg powered away on the high-side to take the early lead. Herrick battled with Chris Simpson, Chad Simpson and Jimmy Mars in the early stages of the event while leader Isenberg worked heavy lapped traffic on lap 13.
The event's only caution flag flew on lap 21 for a slowing Justin Hirt, ending Isenberg's advantage. On the restart, it was Isenberg out front with Chris Simpson and a hard-charging Jimmy Mars behind him on the Delaware double file restart. Isenberg shot back out to the lead on the restart with Mars working his way past Chris Simpson to the runner-up spot and put his target on Isenberg's #9t machine. Mars closed to within a car length on lap 24 and for the remaining 11 laps, the two cars battled with Isenberg running the middle to top groove and the 'Iceman' utilizing the bottom groove on the racy Bob Timm prepared surface.
Lapped traffic allowed Mars to pull even through turns 1 and 2 but it was Isenberg who had the fast way around MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY on the top in turns 3 and 4 that allowed the Wisconsin driver to pull away to a car length victory over DLM Hall of Famer Mars for his first career Corn Belt Clash Series victory. In victory lane, a very humble Isenberg recounted battling his car builder for the win. "I love racing with the series and to get my first series win over my car builder made it even sweeter," stated Isenberg. Isenberg's #9t MB Customs II machine is powered by a Roush Yates engine and is sponsored by Don Nikolai Construction, McMillan Electric and Chase Graphics. "The series has some great competition and strong talent and this was a great win on a great track." Isenberg and Mars were followed to the checkers by Chris Simpson, Chad Simpson and A.J. Diemel.
The remainder of the top-10 was Jason Rauen (2011 CBC feature winner at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY), Andrew McKay, Kyle Jumbeck, Nick Herrick with 'Chargin' Charlie McKenna coming home in 10th place and also capturing the Hooker Harness Hard Charger of the Race Award by advancing 7 positions from his ninth-row starting position. The Kindl LLC Business Solutions Quick Six was won by A.J. Diemel over Jimmy Mars. Diemel then drew the 6 pill on the dash re-draw to start the A-Main from the third row.
WAITS WINS USRA MODIFIED FEATURE
A large 28 car field rumbled onto the 1/3 mile MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY for the evening's River City Manufacturing USRA Modified Feature, and the drama started even before the waiving of the green flag! Rolling out onto the racing surface, outside pole sitter Kurt Krauskopf #60 Modified lost its right front tire. Krauskopf's crew was able to get a new right front bolted on before the starting green flag, but despite being fast early, Krauskopf fell to a less than pleasing 18th place finish on the final results sheet.
While Krauskopf was falling through the field, several drivers were headed in the opposite direction, working their way from starting positions deep in the 28 car field to very strong finishes. West Concord, MN Nick Herrick raced his way through heavy traffic, after starting on the outside of the seventh row (14th starting position) to a satisfying 6th place finish. Recent feature winner Lucas Schott appeared to turn on the after burners and worked his way from an eleventh place starting spot (inside 6th row) all the up to a very impressive 2nd place finish. While defending MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY track champion Bob Tim had everyone paying attention to his #49 Modified making an almost amazing charge as he worked his way through the field after starting almost dead last on the inside of the 14th row (27th) all the way up to a 5th place finish. While it may not have been a feature win, the finish in the top-five, after starting so far back in such a large field, was a mini-victory of sorts in and of itself.
But, the man of the evening was Brad Waits. After winning the first heat race earlier in the evening, Waits lined his black #24 up on the outside of the third row for the start of the 25-lap main event. After working his way towards the front, Waits caught the race leader in turn two and, as the duo went side by side in the bottom groove, Waits squirted past for lead and never looked back. "It was tight, but there was still room down there," commented Waits in victory lane with his characteristic calm demeanor, "There was traction down and the bottom and we both wanted it."
The pass for the lead, and eventual win, was almost (almost) less dramatic, than the traffic Waits had to compete with over the closing laps of the feature to hold on for the win. After working through the field as mentioned earlier, young Lucas Schott was able to see the rear of Waits' feature-leading #24. As the race entered its closing laps Waits entered lapped traffic. The first couple cars to went a lap down in relatively easy fashion, but then Waits closed in on a pack of no fewer than four or five racers who themselves were embroiled in a heated battle for position.
"Yeah, they were racing hard for position too," responded Waits acceptingly, when asked about the lapped traffic that allowed Schott to close almost within striking distance, "the track was fast and they had their own battle happening." Waits was boxed in and Schott was gaining, but the Chatfield youngster ran out of laps as Waits held on for the feature win.
Pole sitter Doug Herrick finished third, with third heat-race winner Dan Bohr fourth and Timm rounding out the top five.
BRAUER CLAIMS $400 BONUS WITH FEATURE WIN
Rochester's Jeff Brauer has written his name into the books as a regular threat in the Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock division at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. Any time Brauer's #34 is on the track, it's more than likely headed towards the front. The 2011 track champion currently just outside the top-five in the point standings early in the 2012 season, but Friday nights results will help - with big gains in both points and dollars.
Compliments of the 2012 "Progressive Winner's Bonus" promotion offered to the winner of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, the 22 drivers who lined up for Friday's feature knew that in addition to the regular weekly payout, they were also racing for a $400 bonus if they could win the feature.
Jay Oricchio, of Ellsworth, WI, a weekly competitor in the Super Stock division was looking for a way become even more involved with the division and spark increased interest by fellow drivers - his "Progressive Bonus" is doing just that. Each week, the "Progressive Winner's Bonus" is provided by Coordinated Business Systems, Kyocera & J-Mev Motorsports - it is structured in such a way that a $200 bonus is GUARANTEED for EVERY week's Super Stock feature. If a Friday night program is ever rained out (such as what happened Friday May 25th at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY) the $200 for that rained out program is "rolled forward" to the following week's event, and ADDED TO the $200 for that program - providing for a $400 bonus! This is exactly the scenario which was taking place for the Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Supers Stocks feature Friday night.
A wild Super Stock Feature played out as every driver strapped in for the waiving green flag had visions of Four-Hundred extra dollars waiting for them if they could just get to the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Victory Lane.
Front row starters Bart Steffen and former Track Champion Troy Langowski rocketed away from the field early before falling out of the top-five. Heat race winners Dan Gullikson (first heat-race), Tommy Richards (second heat-race) and Shane Kisling (third heat-race) saddled with starting positions deep within the field (8th, 7th and 9th respectively) and had to work their way through the field to even get near the front.
Unlike the heat winner's deep starting spots, Brauer was lined up third on the starting grid, but despite starting on the inside of the second row, Brauer's run to the larger payday was not as easy as one might think. "Had to regroup just a little at the beginning," Brauer said later after being asked about the early laps of the feature, "everyone is strong in this division."
While not falling deep into the field, it did take a bit before Brauer's #34 was challenging for the lead. Brauer then had to deal with the #8 of Kelly Anderson who, as a driver of one of Jay Oricchio's J-Mev Motorsports Super Stocks would had loved to collect the extra bonus money from his own boss. Anderson but up a valiant charge that had the duo racing side by side for the lead, but it was Brauer who grabbed the feature win, the trip to Victory Lane, and the extra $400 winner's bonus, "I do want to send a really big thanks to Jay and Coordinated Business Systems and all those involved with this bonus," said Brauer in Victory Lane, "The support that they are putting into this division is great to see, and the car count shows that we appreciate it."
Anderson settled for second, with Gullikson, Richards and Kisling completing the top five.
WALSKI'S B-MOD BACK TO VICTORY LANE
Shaun Walski could see the front of the field at the start of TheEngineStore.com USRA B-Mod feature. And as the green flag sent the Feature field into turn one to start the 18-lap event, he went to work getting his #95 there. But, of course, all of the competitors around him had exactly the same thoughts and plans.
Coming off a feature win the last time the B-Mods hit the track at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, 15 year-old Jacob Blees had the same thought as well. And not only could he see the top spot at the start of the feature, he was in it! Starting from the pole position after winning the second heat-race earlier in the evening, Blees appeared to be one of the odds on favorites to be battling for the eventual win. The odds makers were right. For such a young racer, Blees continues to show his skills with a smooth and fast driving style that almost belies his age. "I learned everything by all the years I spent racing go karts," explained the soft spoken youngster earlier in the evening, "All those years racing karts taught me how to race, and I think that's what's helping me the most with the B-Mod."
Blees' speed and style was on display again Friday as he jumped from the pole to battle out front for the entire feature. When the checkered flag finally put an end to the main event though, Blees was on the outside looking in; Walski had his #95 in striking position and took the top spot to race his way onto the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Victory Lane. "Jake is a really good racer," commented Walski about the battle for the win, "He's a good kid, a great driver and a clean racer."
Blees was followed across the start finish line by another youngster who continues to enjoy a strong 2012 season - Alex Williamson held off current point leader and multi-feature winner Erik Kanz for third. Behind Kanz Jack Baehman raced his way to one of his strongest finishes, crossing the line fifth with his #11 to round out the top-five.
PROVINZINO POWERS HIS WAY TO ANOTHER 600 MOD WIN
Chanhassen, MN's Joe Provinzino added another feature win to his growing count for the 2012 season, and also padded his points lead a bit more after stealing the top spot from Greg Wohletz in the Redbox+ 600 Mod feature Friday night. Wohletz, who started from the pole, looked on his way to claiming his first feature win, before Provinzino powered past to take the checkered flag.
Second heat-race winner Curt Luhmann finished third with John Griffin and Don Werner rounding out the top-five.
Chris Abts won the evening's Elmer's Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stock Feature, while Mike Stevens and AJ Hoff won the Sunshine Sanitation A and B Mini Mod features on the Lightning Speedway.
