FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (June 15, 2012) – With much more to race for than just a checkered flag, the action at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY was as hot as the threatening, thick and humid mid-June weather. Anyone looking at an internet weather forecast might have made the decision that racing was not going to happen; but instead of the forecasted "100% chance of rain" at 7 PM, those race fans who gambled against "Mother Nature" were treated to "100% on-track action"!
In addition to critical track and season points, the Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stocks and Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks were racing for a guaranteed position in the 2012 WISSOTA Race Of Champions which would be awarded to the winner of the evening's features. The Super Stocks were also racing for yet another $200 feature winner bonus compliments of Coordinated Business Systems, Kyocera and J-Mev Motorsports.
TheEngineStore.com USRA B-Mods were racing to dethrone 14-year old Alex Williamson, who'd picked up his very first feature win just the previous Friday evening in a convincing display of speed and driver abilities.
The River City Manufacturing USRA Modifieds learned at the last minute before opening ceremonies that they would be racing against 9-Time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock - who showed up at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY for a little USRA fun.
The Redbox+ 600 Mods were all trying to find a way to tie an anchor onto the rear-end of Joe Provinzino, who'd already piloted his JoeProvoRaceWear.com #89 to four feature wins through the opening weeks of competition on MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY's 1/3-Mile oval.
All of this and more, from the remaining divisions; no one was going to let a measly negative weather forecast stand in the way of deciding these story lines with hard-fought tire-to-tire battles!
KELLY ANDERSON TAKES THE FEATURE WIN, THE EXTRA CASH AND THE ROC QUALIFIER - JUST BARELY
Shane Kisling, Tommy Richards, Jeff Brauer, Jason Forehand, and a host of others took to the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY banking to finally determine who'd be crowned victor for the evening and take the whole ball of wax home with them and them alone; the checkered flag, the cash & the WISSOTA ROC Qualifier.
After winning the evening's first heat race, Tommy Richards was also winner of the draw/re-draw and lined his #7R up on the inside of front row to prepare for the evening's feature. Fresh off of winning the Coordinated Business System's WISSOTA Super Stock feature the week before, the pole-position starting spot definitely put Richards' name on the list as a potential winner. Current point leader, and two-time feature winner Shane "The Brain" Kisling is always a threat, but his #6 faced the green flag from the inside of the third row - he'd need to work the traffic in order to qualify for a guaranteed return trip to the ROC - which he won in 2011. Defending Track Champion Jeff Brauer inside second row starting spot was one row better than Kisling, but he was surrounded by valid threats that he'd need to battle. But tucked away and almost secretly hidden on the outside of the fourth row was the #8 of Kelly Anderson.
From his pole starting position, Richards looked like he was en route to backing up the previous week's feature win with a second in as many weeks. But as Richards battled outside pole sitter Josh Rodewald early, the crowd was focused in on Kisling, who was working his way toward the front in his usual smooth and calculating style.
Kisling reeled in Richards' Feature leading car and the crowd was ready for a two car battle for the win. In the closing laps, the race fans were treated to that two car battle. Some thought Richards would hold off Kisling, others expected Kisling to quickly dispense with Richards and move on to the win; what many had missed, though, was the dark #8 of Anderson, working his way through the field towards the two car battle out front.
Kisling threw several challenges at Richards for the lead, but was rebuffed each time as Richards had his #7R nailed to the preferred line and retained the number one spot. Suddenly, with the two laps remaining signal displayed the field, there was a third car added to the battle. Anderson's #8 had caught the leaders and ready to race both for the win.
White flag - Anderson laid it all on the table. With Kisling already challenging Richards on the inside of turns one and two, Anderson added his entry even lower than Kisling. The trio came out of turn two three-wide! One final time through turns three and four and it was Anderson grabbing a stunning feature win by less than a foot at the start/finish line as the checkered flag waved!
"Jay Oricchio, Coordinated Business Systems and Kyocera have been throwing extra money towards the feature winner all summer," smiled Anderson from Victory Lane, "I told Jay that since he's my car owner, I needed to earn some of that money back for him!"
Richards held on for second with Kisling settling for third.
WOJCIK FINALLY FINDS VICTORY LANE
Ladysmith, WI racer Doug Wojcik has enjoyed a lot of success in his 5 years of racing. Feature wins, a couple track championships, and the 2011 WI State Championship . . . but up until Friday, he'd never collected a feature win at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY.
Things did, indeed, look promising for the Michigan Technical University student as he piloted his #3D to the front of the pack in the evening's first heat race and held off Shaun Mann for the win. And since the Streeters were also competing for the WISSOTA ROC Qualifier, the draw/re-draw put his 3D right on the pole for green flag to start the evening's feature.
With current point leader Cory Hanson starting from the outside of the second row and second heat race winner Danny Richards lined up alongside second in points Shaun Mann back in the fourth row, Wojcik could focus on fending off early feature challenges from a strong Nick Schwebach.
Wojcik stepped away from the pack as a fierce six to eight car battle for the rest of the top-10 positions raged behind him.
Hanson and Mann tried to real in Wojcik, but were unable to capture him and relieve him of the top spot. A pumped up Wojcik was celebrating the feature win while still strapped inside the car on the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY victory lane - audibly giving his feature winning speech even before the speedway announcer arrived with the microphone to allow him to share the moment with the fans, "WHEW! I've had feature wins before at other tracks," smiled Wojcik while still in the car, "but a feature win here at MTS was like my unicorn!"
After climbing from the car he explained to the crowd, "My family and crew have been saying that a feature win here at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY was like my unicorn, I just couldn't seem to get one! But, I finally got it tonight!!"
Hanson and Mann completed the top three.
SCHOTT ALMOST DOES IT AGAIN
Earlier this season, young Lucas Schott picked up his second feature win on a dry slick track at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY and explained to the crowd from Victory Lane, "When I won my first feature the track was (dry slick) like this and I was able to beat Kelly Shryock." This Friday night, the track was the exact opposite; moist, heavy, tacky . . . some late in the afternoon, some stars lined up in convergence somewhere and something did end up being the same as that first evening's feature win for "Cool Hand Luke" - Kelly Shryock's hauler pulled his familiar #3 into the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY pits.
After winning the night's first heat race win, holding off Brad Waits and defending track champion Bob Timm for the checkered flag, Shryock found himself deep in the starting lineup for the evening's feature, lined up outside of the fourth row, he was starting just ahead of second heat race winner, and 2010 track champion, Josh Angst who was also packed deep in the field - starting outside of the fifth row when the green flag flew.
But a deep starting spot in a competitive field is nothing new to Shryock - minor obstacles such as this don't rattle a 9-time USMTS Champion. Like a sculptor, the Fertile, Iowa driver carved his way through the bulk of what was in his way en route to creating a masterpiece of art that eventually lead him to the front of the field.
It wasn't necessarily quick, first he had to deal with the mid-pack competitors all around him. Then he started checking off the drivers who started at the front of the field, then it was on to working around those at the front of the field as the feature wore on. 2009 track champion John Doelle, who was enjoying a strong run, finally gave up second which set up for a nice battle between Shryock and Timm for the lead. Shryock got by and was then out front.
What followed was a nice effort by Timm to regain the top position. Timm tried multiple and different lines in an effort to mount several challenges on Shryock, but all came up empty as he could not get up alongside and then around the feature leading blue #3.
All the while, Lucas Schott's #69 was like wise working the field and heading towards the front. With three laps remaining, Schott had caught Timm and was challenging him for second. Coming through turn four towards the waiving white flag, Schott turned up the intensity and made an aggressive move to the inside - the two came together relatively hard in side-slapping contact which turned second over to the young Chatfield, MN racer.
One final lap, one final challenge. It came down to turns three and four; Schott gave Shryock all he had and came up just a bit short and had to settle for a second place finish, "Yeah, what can you say about young Luke," said Shryock after pulling into Victory Lane as the winner, "was a great driver - a lot of natural talent there, he's a really impressive racer."
Shryock went on to explain his somewhat surprise visit this Friday evening, "Yeah, there are some big races coming up here at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER and it's always good to be ready, I like this track and we'll definitely be back a few more times this year."
Timm held on for third with Waits and Doelle completing the top five.
WALSKI PICKS UP CLEAN SWEEP IN B-MODS
Shaun Walski picked up a clean sweep in the TheEngineStore.com USRA B-Mods, winning both the evening's second heat race and coming from inside the second row to win the night's feature event.
Josh Angst made a surprise appearance in the B-Mod division and held off first heat race winner Jacob Bleess for second. Parker Hale grabbed fourth with Jack Baehman matching his career best feature finish in fifth.
PROVINZINO FIRST FIVE-TIME FEATURE WINNER WITH 600 MOD WIN
Chanhassen, MN's Joe Provinzino became 2012's first five-time feature winner by holding off a hard charging Curt Luhmann and Chris Eide to win yet another Redbox+ 600 mod feature. "That one was a workout," "The car was perfect, the track was fast, the only troubles I had were right here," huffed and puffed Provinzino in Victory Lane while pointing at his biceps, "I was working it as hard as I could tonight, and I am completely worn out after that one."
SWEAZEY WINS WILD PURE STOCK FEATURE
Paul Sweazey's orange #68 was the class of the field in Friday night's Elmer's Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stock feature. It looked early like he was going to have to settle for second behind last Friday night's feature winner Quinn Arnoldy, until Arnoldy abruptly pulled his #OZ off the track while leading. Sweazey motored on to the finish and the win followed by points leader Corey Ziemer and Bobby Fort, Jr.
The Pure Stock feature was interrupted by a red flag incident when the rear end on heat race winner Chris Abts' #27 broke in turn two, sending him head on into the outside wall. The almost perpendicular impact sent Abts car straight up in the air in a barrel roll at least six to eight feet in the air before the car slammed back down to the ground and coming to rest on it's roof. But, thankfully, despite being an economical and entry level division, the safety requirements for the MTS Pure Stock are just as rigid as other divisions and Abts was able to crawl from the remains of his bent and battered car unhurt.
MOTL, BUCKLAND AND BECKER WINNERS ON THE LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY
Mark Motl was the feature event during the second to three visits to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY'S LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY by the Outlaw Mini Mod Series. Motl scampered away from the field and led flag to flag to pick up the feature win.
Dylan Buckland made it back to back feature wins in the Sunshine Sanitation A Mini Mod division, pulling away from the field for the second week in a row and gathering in the feature win. Nate Becker, meanwhile, grabbed his first B-Mini Mod feature win.
